Apple suddenly became the leader of the market of wearable electronics. According to Strategy Analytics, in the first quarter of 2017, the company has delivered 3.5 million smart watches. This is 59 percent more than 2.2 million units over the same period last year.
Who is ahead?
Apple took first place at the Fitbit and currently holds 16 percent of the global market of wearable electronics. Fitbit has shipped just 2.9 million devices – this is as much as 36 percent less than the 4.5 million fitness bracelets and smart watches in the first quarter of 2016. Even Xiaomi has sold more similar gadgets, shifting one of the first manufacturers of wearable electronics to third place.
These results correspond to latest report Apple’s income. Previously, the company announced that sales of set top box and Watch TV for the quarter in total increased by 31 percent compared to the same period of time in 2016. Also Apple CEO Tim cook said that in comparison with the last year sales of smart watches has almost doubled. Additionally, Strategy Analytics noted that Apple Watch Series 2 sold well due to better design, aggressive marketing and ubiquitous presence hours in retail.
For comparison, the demand for smart watches and fitness bracelets from Fitbit fell drastically, due to the emergence of more and more number of similar devices. In order to regain lost market share, in autumn the company is going to release a new model of smart watches and wireless headsets, which may not be enough.
