Browse Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy — “3 in 1” as a child

Nostalgia — irresistible force. A minute ago your head was able to push thoughts of the unpaid loan and a burning deadline, but barely in the hands of a gamepad and on the screen — a familiar beach with a grinning Bandicoot, everything suddenly loses meaning. Would like as a barefoot boy to rush a red swirl through the jungle. To throw right and left in the part of crabs, snakes and turtles, jump over the pits and raskulachivanie on the run boxes, of which sleep Vampa-fruit. Only speed, only the wind, only happiness ahead. Well, Hello, Crash Bandicoot. It’s been what? Twenty years?

Red angular

A long time ago when the grass was the right shade of green, each gaming platform had its own character mascot. Face was Nintendo plumber Mario, SEGA relied on the charisma of sonic the hedgehog and Sony put on a brash Bandicoot. In the nineties 3D platforming with Crash, developed by the Studio Naughty Dog exclusively for the PlayStation sold millions of copies. Cheerful madness console wars perfectly characterized the debut is Crash Bandicoot 1996, in which the man in the orange plush costume arrives at the office of Nintendo and yells into the megaphone: “Hey, mustachioed plumber, your worst nightmare is already here. Pack your stuff“.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

In the era of “Pepsi” and “Em-ti-VI” the popularity of the Tomboy in shorts and sneakers was so great that Universal even thought of making a theme Park and an animated series (on the pilot episode did not get). Unfortunately, after three mega-successful license editions and good racing spin-off Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin, founders of Naughty Dog the creators of crash, moved on to other projects. Once the flagship series of Sony, starting to wander from one Studio to the other, degenerated into a series of shameful craft like a pinball simulator. It is therefore not surprising that last year’s announcement of the remaster of the original trilogy of Crash Bandicoot for the PlayStation 4 many viewed with skepticism. Is Activision, which owns the rights to the franchise, wants the easy way to cash in on nostalgic fans?

Triple blow

You only run N. Sane Trilogy, as distrust gives way to delight. Instead of angular marsupial from 512 polygons — cartoon cute with a fur coat that would look great in “Zeropolis”. Redraw all! The leaves of the palm trees dancing in the wind, butterflies fluttering in the grass, the water shimmers with sunbeams.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

Thanks to the new lighting, models, shadows, weather effects, detailed textures and other visual bells and whistles retro 90s fit compared with the restart of Ratchet & Clank, and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Or even with cartoons by Pixar and DreamWorks. So what Sane N. Trilogy? A collection of remakes, revisions or re-mastering? Rather, something original.

Studio Vicarious Visions, which is owned by Activision, had to create everything from scratch: source code and reference materials of Naughty Dog’s creations have long ago lost. However, they do with the Titanic task of writing your engine and almost pixel by pixel restoring three games. Authentic gameplay, locations, location, bins, traps, enemies and secret areas recreated one by one. Here is the Crash riding on the squealing boar rushes through the jungle, avoiding obstacles and collecting fruit. Here he is diving conquers the depths of the sea, dodging sharks and Moray eels. But the character jump on the platforms in the Egyptian tomb, meet the new vortex attack scarabs and mummies. Wu-GA-Boo-GA! Like old!

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

Forgot Vicarious Visions about improving sound. The soundtrack, screensavers and replicas of characters overwritten with the newly, with the involvement of the original actors of the trilogy (for example, life in the demon evil mask Uka-Uka breathed incomparable John Di Maggio, aka the voice of the robot Bender and Marcus Fenix). Some tracks are recycled, but the familiar chime of marimba hoot there-tamov African melodies and the classic Crash Bandicoot is still recognizable from the first notes.

The floor is lava

But no matter how I wanted to sing N. Sane Trilogy, the gameplay of the collection is quite outdated. The levels are tiny and linear today such simplicity will not meet each runner. Unresponsive management, coupled with bad camera angles make some of the highlights of the anthology too complicated. Missed half a millimeter, jumping on a tiny platform? Restart. Ran into the enemy? Restart. Not memorized the sequence of traps, running away from the Triceratops? Restart, restart, restart.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy

A textbook example: map of Road to Nowhere from the first Crash Bandicoot. Need to cross a flimsy suspension bridge over the icy precipice. In boardwalk gaping holes, some of wood covered with slippery frost, others break down after a couple of seconds, if you step on them, others will instantly crumble to dust. Run Bandicoot run. Live, die and repeat again. Oh yeah, by the bridge rush of the boar, turning the already difficult dance over the abyss beyond sadistic. It is not surprising that the forums are Sane N. Trilogy already ironic compared to Dark Souls and Super Meat Boy.

Another problem is the repetitiveness of the locations and episodes N. Sane Trilogy. First time to race riding on the pig in Crash Bandicoot — fun. But why copy a scene several times? Skedaddle like Indiana Jones from a giant boulder in Crash Bandicoot? How about a similar escape, but from a polar bear in the sequel? And from the Triceratops — in the third part. The question is, what prevented the restorers to go the way of Ratchet & Clank and Tomb Raider: Anniversary, to combine the spirit of the original with updated gameplay?

It turns out that the creation of Vicarious Visions causes conflicting emotions. Modern gamers who are familiar with Naughty Dog on the Uncharted series, can frighten archaic mechanics and awkward controls, which sometimes you want to throw your controller at the TV. But longtime fans of the Bandicoot will surely be delighted. Dreamed of a literal remake? Receive and sign. Plus the opportunity to play the trilogy for Coco, crash’s sister, the table online of records and races on time for speedrunners. What more could you want? Is that a new adventure orange Tomboy. And they, judging by the wild success of the N. Sane Trilogy from the nostalgic public and hints Activision, not far off.
