Chromebooks-Chromebook transformers Plus and Pro from Samsung with access to Google Play
Recently, special attention and popularity of laptops-transformers, which combine the convenience of a tablet with touch controls, and performance of the usual laptop. And almost every self-respecting manufacturer considers it a sacred duty to have a couple of hybrids in their ranks.
Those readers who watch for the technical innovations, probably aware that at the January CES 2017, Samsung unveiled two of its newcomers from the Chromebook models Plus and Pro.
Of course, the creation of these “chrome transformers” had a hand and Google is by providing as the base for its Chrome OS and devices equipped with Google Play with support for Android applications. Quite an interesting move as for a laptop. What ultimately happened to create two technology giants try to figure out in our review.
Design
Of course, first catches the eye is the aluminum “armor”, which cloaked both versions of the hybrid laptop – metal always looks reliable and win-win. However, to equip their devices with metal casings now are not uncommon. Chromebook Plus is only represented in classic silver color, and model Pro recently got a new color scheme – black.
No wonder chromebooks Samsung’s name is transformers. Thanks to the special hinges of the laptop is “cool” to 360⁰, allowing you to use it in any convenient position for the user. Most popular of them: classic notebook, tablet, monitor (the keyboard is behind the display) or “tent” (upside-down letter “V”). The dimensions of both models is of 280.8×221,6×13.9 mm, and weighs just over 1 kg.
In principle, such as “highlights” of registration no Plus, no Pro-version is not received, the appearance impregnated with minimalism and looks quite serious. However, these hybrids are something special that sets them apart from other counterparts is the size of the screen. Usually laptops use already quite familiar widescreen displays with an aspect ratio of 16:9, but Samsung decided to apply a more square matrix with a ratio of 3:2.
Thanks to such a solution when working with the text or during the Internet surfing the screen can hold more information. Probably the first time you use will have to adapt to the already somewhat forgotten format, but just in 10-20 minutes, the difference will be subtle.
Display and stylus support
Chromebook Plus Pro has received the 12.3-inch touch screens for laptops with non-standard aspect ratio, as stated above, and a resolution of 2400×1600 (quad HD). The pixel density is 234 pixels per inch.
One of the key features of both devices was the support of functional stylus. It can be used to take handwritten notes (which are identified with support for Google Keep), you draw on a graphics tablet, take screenshots or use as a laser pointer.
Visually, the pen is very similar to that Samsung equips its smartphone line-up Note, except that it is somewhat larger and thicker and has extra buttons. The stylus is hidden in a kind of “case” in the upper right corner of the keyboard unit, and when it is ejected on the screen immediately POPs up a context menu which allows you to configure the stylus.
It is important to note that Samsung is the only manufacturer (in contrast to the same Lenovo or HP), which equips its chromebooks digital “pen”. Those who are accustomed to working on large desktops on a modest-sized keyboard and the touchscreen chromebooks might be a little tight, which should at least partially be compensated by a stylus.
Performance
Though both models have more similarities than differences, one significant difference between them. And this processor. The Plus version works under the guidance of specially developed by Samsung 6-core ARM-processor (2×A72 and 4×Quad A53), while the Pro features a more powerful Intel Core M3 x86.
Both trasformer available with 4 GB of RAM on Board and 32GB of internal storage. Of course, for bulk storage of files that flash memory is not enough, but if desired, it can be expanded using a memory card.
With regard to autonomy, both fairly average. The producers promise of 8 hours on a single charge, but this figure varies depending on the extent of the load device.
Connectivity
And the model Plus, and Pro have two USB connector Type-C, audio 3.5 mm, port charger and a slot for a memory card. But in addition they provides and output to a 4K monitor with a special adapter that can be very useful for users working with graphics.
Wireless interfaces are presented with a standard set – Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11 ac Wi-Fi.
Conclusion
If you draw a line then a Chromebook Plus and Pro from South Korean brand are a good and functional “work horses” of the middle segment, though not devoid of some shortcomings. The Plus version will have to pay $449, and a more powerful, savoury, in turn, will be a hundred more — $549.
