Google Play Protect failed to catch the virus with 20 million installations
In late July, Google together with the firmware update Play services has launched its own anti-virus on machine learning Play Protect, which scans applications on user devices and in the Google Play, comparing their contents with the known components of the malware and to notify of potential risks. A few days later after running antivirus Google reported its first successes. But the ideal protection is not known to exist. One virus was able to bypass the security of Google and to get to 20 million units.
Check Point working in the field of IT security, called the virus ExpensiveWall. It was found in popular apps like Lovely Wallpaper. The virus secretly signs up users to premium SMS services, funds from which go to its developers. But experts Check Point to assure that malicious ExpensiveWall capable of much more dangerous actions like theft of data or remote shooting device holder through the camera.
Infected ExpensiveWall applications request permission to access the Internet and SMS messages. Then malware at equal intervals of time connects to a remote server and executes the received commands.
According to Check Point, antivirus Protect Play was set to search ExpensiveWall, but the developers modified the latest virus protection therefore Google are unable to detect it. As a result, multiple applications with installations from 5 to 20 million people have been infected with this virus.
