Google is actively promoting technology speed up loading web pages. The most obvious way is image compression, which account for the bulk of the data, and in 2010 the company introduced the WebP format, which allows to dramatically reduce file size without losing quality. But Google it, almost nobody uses, so the search giant took up the optimization of JPEG images. A new algorithm Guetzli reduce their weight on average by 35%, while the same size it is able to preserve more details.

A new algorithm Guetzli reduce their weight on average by 35%, without degrading the image and at the same size it is able to preserve more details.

What have they done?

Guetzli, the name of which in Swiss dialect means “cookies”, analyzes the image using the developed in Google Butteraugli psychovisual model, which takes into account the peculiarities of human vision. Because the retina of the eye better perceive red and green color image compression, it is possible to pay less attention to the blue areas. The disadvantage of this approach is a relatively small conversion rate images, but the advantages of the new algorithm is much more.

When comparing JPEG files that are compressed using the standard libjpeg library and Guetzli, in most cases users preferred the result with the Google algorithm. In the images above he is shown to the right, and the center version of libjpeg immediately catches the eye greater amount of noise.

Technology for all

Google opened access to its compression algorithm — all the information about Guetzli can be found on GitHub. The company added that the compressed JPEG files are compatible with existing browsers, and will normally be displayed in third-party image viewer.
