Modern e-ink displays its characteristics is almost not different from the present paper and the devices with them comfortably read fiction anytime, anywhere. And what about the technical literature and various textbooks with lots of illustrations until recently, things were not so smooth: navigation within the same large page — not very handy thing. His solution to this problem was proposed by one of the leaders of the market of electronic books in its new gadget with a huge 9.7-inch display — ONYX BOOX Chronos.
Reader comes in a fairly large and solid cardboard box, which is located inside the gadget, already dressed in brand case, power supply, cable USB-microUSB and a set of documents.
The novelty comes in the only color option case — black. The front panel of the e-book is made of a nice touch matte plastic, and the rear, with the exception of the plug bottom, closed by metal. On the plug there is a perforation, but the dynamics, as could be expected under it.
To the right of the display are four navigation buttons: “Forward”, “Back”, “Back” and “Menu”. So the user was not mistaken in the choice of the button using the controls blindly, all the keys in different places marked with raised dots.
The left and right side of the gadget and its upper end is empty. But the bottom-the manufacturer has placed the power button / led indicator, micro-USB connector and a slot for memory cards microSD. Between pressing power and micro-USB port located plug, to the place where you and asks a 3.5 mm audio Jack.
Traditional “trick” of all electronic books ONYX has long been a presence in the package of practical and beautiful covers, of which the afternoon with fire not find in the boxes with other gadgets. Chronos cover is made of high quality leather a brown color, and inside upholstered in black velvety material. The quality of the case on top: all stitches are made carefully, the protruding threads is nowhere — back cover clearly designed for continuous operation.
Thanks to the presence of the magnet, and in the book — the Hall sensor, closing the cover automatically puts the gadget into standby mode.
Because of the large display size to keep Chronos on weight in one hand though, but not for long hand gets tired quickly. It is, in General, true for any tablet. Much easier to hold the gadget with two hands, or laying it on an inclined surface on the desktop.
The workmanship is high: the parts fit each other as tightly as possible, cracks, squeaks and no backlash.
The ebook uses a 9.7-inch matrix E-Ink Carta with support for 16 shades of gray and a resolution of 1200х825 pixels. This is the latest generation of monochrome electronic paper, which is increased to a ratio of 15:1 contrast and increased whiteness of the substrate, closely approximate to normal paper. Of course, compared to the same matrix IPS and OLED screen resolution Chronos does not look too impressive, but do not forget about a fundamentally different device screens on electronic ink. On this display you will not see individual pixels, and even very small text will appear quite clearly.
The challenge of properly backlighting such a large E-Ink display is not as simple as it seems at first glance, but here, the manufacturer did everything possible. LEDs, 18 pieces placed along the long side of the display, which makes the whole screen illuminated evenly. Of course, small areas with uneven lighting could not be avoided, but given the screen size, the work was worthy.
Display, of course, the touch uses a capacitive technology with multitouch support. Not without its signature features ONYX: e-book screen technology used Snow Field that allows you to clean a substrate of a display of artifacts from previous pages, even when using partial updates. This feature works in apps OReader and NEO Reader 2.0, which is enabled by default.
ONYX BOOX Chronos is running significantly redesigned Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. The home page of the shell also serves as the Central shelf of your library: it shows the current title and below the last open. At the very top is the status bar, where in addition to the time and battery level are located the Home button, and switch to the updates screen. The notification panel in the shell is invoked by clicking on the image of the clock at the top of the screen. Adjusts the brightness of the backlight in the app MOON Light, the icon which located at the bottom, in the dock for quick access. In the application OReader backlight level is conveniently regulated by maintaining your finger up or down on the right side of the screen. To get used to such a function can be per minute, for the agility of fingers and no magic. There are also four quick access icons and a button “Applications”, clicking on which opens a list of all installed programs.
Of course, in the dock with icons at the bottom is a shortcut to the main application library that automatically scans internal and external memory of the device and books. The library can choose your own, books can be displayed either in the form of covers or a list. To sort books in the library provides collections that the user can create, then transfer them need the work.
If you want to stick to more traditional methods of organizing the library using the folder to access the downloaded books can use the program “file Manager”. This is a simple file Manager, adapted to operate on the e-book, which, however, supports basic operations like moving files between folders.
Built-in keyboard is made as simple as possible — exactly what you need on the E-Ink display.
Other applications for ONYX BOOX pre-installed Chronos calendar, calculator, Gallery and the browser is a standard Android application. But the main thing — e-reader fully supports Google services and Google Play app store, which allows you to extend the functionality of the electronic book according to your wishes.
In terms of reading fiction, ONYX BOOX Chronos is virtually indistinguishable from a compact e-books manufacturer, for example, models Darwin 3, a review of which you can read here. And easy reading literature in formats PDF and DjVu gadget has gone far ahead — a 9.7-inch screen Chronos allows you to view A4 size documents without the need to increase pages. This can be useful in this opportunity? Almost anyone who has to deal not only with fiction. Techies would be useful to be able to read datasheets and other technical documentation, musicians, music books, and students and students — books and manuals. While reading these books you can do text notes, highlighting important but it will have to do a finger or a special stylus for capacitive display.
For reading texts, consisting of two columns, often found in various articles and magazines, you can use the auto split page into two equal parts, between which movement is to be carried out with the buttons of paging.
In fact, the split pages will be most useful not to read the articles, and fans of comics and manga. You can manually select the number of parts into which is divided the page (from two to nine) and the path that will move the picture when you press the buttons of paging. It allows you to read almost any graphic works (including in cbr format), without having to use the touch screen in an endless attempt to adjust the picture position.
When reading image formats picture is highly configurable. So, just a couple of clicks you can crop margins on the sides or around the perimeter of the page, and make maximum use of the display space. If the image is hardly distinguishable, you can increase the contrast to make it more clear.
If technical literature is bored, you can move on to something easier. Of course, when reading books in fb2, epub and you can further customize the text to your liking, from the size of the font and ending with the margins and line spacing intervals.
The new product uses Rockchip RK3026 dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 at speeds up to 1 GHz, graphics accelerator ARM Mali-400 MP and 512MB of RAM. As with any device with E-Ink display, performance, ONYX BOOX Chronos is not limited by the hardware, and refresh rate of the display. To evaluate this gadget synthetic tests makes no sense, but subjective impressions were positive: there is no lack of performance in everyday use e-books is not felt. Yes, even though most of the action on the device do not occur instantly, but takes 1-3 seconds, but the e — book is not the gadget in which need the rush.
The internal memory in the device is 8 GB, it is available to the user about 4.2 GB. This should be enough for an impressive library. But the technical literature in PDF format may take a considerable amount, and then the memory is expanded with a card standard microSDHC cards up to 32 GB.
Apart from the obligatory Wi-Fi with support for 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz, Chronos and even supports Bluetooth, which, despite the lack of dynamics and audio Jack allows you to connect your device to a wireless headset and listen to music. You can even call in the messengers, but rather, to demonstrate the possibilities of e-books, and not something you will regularly use.
Capacity Li-Pol battery of the gadget — 3000 mAh. The battery life of the device will vary greatly depending on how often you use the backlight display and wireless connections. It is sad, but unscrewed a maximum backlight will consume the battery much like a normal tablet, except in our case, less tired eyes. But if the book is used, mainly, in the afternoon, when the backlight is not required, then Chronos can safely expect a couple-three weeks of Autonomous operation. This allows, for example, take the gadget for a long trip and not worry about charging at all.
If you frequently work with technical and other texts, full of diagrams and pictures — the new ONYX simply has no equal. Large screen the device allows you to comfortably read the literature “large” format, and when reading books you get bored, you can always connect to the network to surf, listen to music or even run a simple game, the benefit of Android allows it.
