“Super Nintendo” — these magic words knew any Russian child of the 90s. Knew, but most often not possessed by the device itself. “You already have a console, why another one?!” — was indignant the parents, pointing to the “Dandy” and “Sega”. Almost 30 years later, everything has changed: we’ve grown entertainment have changed, the market is ruled by gigahertz and gigabytes… but the SNES is still with us — and returned to the shelves. But whether it was necessary to revive the classical system?

Compact, nice looking and functional — once again Nintendo makes us happy box. Dotted with inscriptions in 12 languages (including Russian), it tells the buyer everything about the device — until basic instructions for use.
Fans of retro gaming will certainly appeal to the reverse side of the shiny cardboard: instead of the banal list of preloaded classics is a vivid kaleidoscope of covers 20 of the masterpieces of the SNES (plus another from the “new” Star Fox 2). Is not fit in the trash to carry, and the shelf mount! Fortunately, to buy a huge Cabinet for it does not have: packaging (by the standards of stationary consoles) is very small.
Why? It’s simple: the device is several times smaller than its prototype. Austerity picking also contributed.
Inside you will find:
- console SNES Classic Mini;
- Classic controllers SNES Mini (2 pieces);
- high speed HDMI cable (1 piece);
- USB cable (1 piece);
- user manual (1 piece).
Unfortunately, the power supply in the set is not out — what Nintendo warns. But do not worry: the console connects easily to any USB input (including the TV).
SNES Classic Mini, like the original “Super Nintendo”, sold in several versions, depending on the region. Americans got light grey “brick” with the purple switches. Everyone else (and Russian collectors in particular) — a pretty gadget of size with his Game Boy.
In addition to the appearance of “our” version SNES favorably with the “American” dimensions — it is shorter and takes up little space on the Desk or in the bag. In addition, “European” is not a single sharp angle. It is difficult to say why this was done, but the detail, no doubt, quite amusing.
Adjusted compact (new items every seven or eight less originals) Mini looks just like the source. The position of the buttons on the case, the correct shades of gray, the designers have reproduced even decorative connectors for the controllers, albeit from a practical point of view, they in 2017, the year unnecessarily. The only reminder that we still the gadget comes from the XXI century — two ports on the rear panel: one for HDMI, another for Micro-USB cable.
Alas, the cell cartridge — model. The same goes for the Eject button — it is made for the sake of aesthetics.
A Power switch and a Reset button (located on both sides of the Eject), however, work with certain subtleties. The expected Power is responsible for feeding device: followed by a nice snap of red light, then the machine begins its work. But Reset, once performed the function of restarting the system now replaces familiar to every modern console gamers the Home function. Want to quickly exit to the main menu? Click on it.
Coming in a set of Mini controllers are connected via connectors Wii Classic Controller — but where are they? On the obverse is blank on the back, only HDMI and Micro-USB. On the sides nothing. Is the marriage? Not at all: the clever designers have hidden the necessary inputs on the front face, behind a false pair of original SNES ports. In General, the design of the updated SNES deserves praise. Nothing more, now retro in the best sense of the word.
The appearance of the controllers, as expected, for 25 years has not changed. The layout of the buttons and shiftof classic color — just like before. On the back — information about manufacturer (Made in China). A separate line is to praise wire length: six feet is convenient.
On the controller there is the usual today the Home button. Therefore, do not recommend strongly to move away from consoles — otherwise you will not be able to switch games or to delve into the options.
The main menu system is divided into three parts. The largest, center — actually, the list of titles. With the button Select you can sort them by different parameters: last started, or in alphabetical order.
Top settings with five sections. In the first (“Screen”) you can change the format for the image frame. Three modes: “Retro”, “4:3” and “Original resolution”. We suggest “Retro”, imitating the ancient picture tubes — the pixels would be less evident. And to great effect is to choose the frame that simulates the front panel of the old TV.
In “Settings” allows you to enable or disable the demo reel (it will start automatically when the console is “idle”) and choose a mode protection against screen burn-in. “Language” will help you configure the interface — in stock, in addition to Russian and English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Dutch. The game, however, will remain in English. In the “Legal information” — a list of rights holders and information about open source SOFTWARE. Finally, in the section “Management” is a QR code, scanning which you will receive the user manual for the device.
The bottom panel is typically located in “hidden” state. To see this, first select the game and then press “down” on the directional pad. Here is save (for four slots on a title), which can be protected against accidental Erasure.
Selection of games
Last year’s NES Classic Mini disappointed many of our countrymen, and causes of dissatisfaction lay in the specific post-Soviet childhood. While the civilized world was playing NES and Famicom with a huge library of hits, the domestic gamer with a delay of several years was content with “Dandy” and cartridges “999 in 1”. The ocean tore the applause of the brilliant The Legend of Zelda and Metroid, while we hand walked “Tanchiki” and other Chinese ports “Aladdin” with the SEGA Mega Drive. Of course, Nintendo has not had the opportunity to put these creations (our favorite, which is already here) in your console.
In the case of the SNES Classic Mini things are different. Once the “Super Nintendo” got to Russia in its original form: officially and with a normal range of cartridges. Therefore, Super Metroid, Donkey Kong Country and Yoshi’s Island in the representations need not — know, remember, love, still, without any prompting from Wikipedia. By the way, many dreamed of these masterpieces as a youth watching “the New reality” Suponeva or reading magazines — and now will be able yourself to experience something beautiful.
21 game from the SNES Classic Mini set:
- Contra III: The Alien Wars
- Donkey Kong Country
- Final Fantasy III
- Kirby Super Star
- Kirby’s Dream Course
- The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
- Mega Man X
- Secret of Mana
- Star Fox
- Star Fox 2
- Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
- Super Castlevania IV
- Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
- Super Mario Kart
- Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
- Super Mario World
- Super Metroid
- Super Punch-Out!!
- Yoshi’s Island
Didn’t notice anything unusual? Suggested: the list is not officially published until Star Fox 2! Once it has developed and almost brought to release, but production was suspended. Now, however, Nintendo picked up the archives and dokrutili the prototype to the final version. Unexpected exclusive to the SNES Classic Mini? Why not.
The machine at work
The device is simple and convenient to operate: connect the HDMI cables and Micro-USB (you can plug directly into the TV), pressed Power and forward — nostalgic all you want. No extra settings for a second selected language, another moment spent on the option image — then just games and nothing but them.
They expected load quickly — even for tea won’t have time to go. The problem with sound is not observed, the sprites don’t blink, bugs have to find day of fire — the emulation is almost perfect.
“Almost“because other titles like novels Star Fox, suffer from a low frame rate. For flight simulators requiring reaction speed, 20 FPS and below is bad manners. If you were hoping that Nintendo will improve performance — nothing. But two-dimensional platformers and side-scrollers feel great: fast to respond, almost no brakes (“gray” only in the most complex scenes), now take a trip down memory lane..
In the device there are two pitfalls that should register separately. The first — mentioned of save in the console menu. Someone thinks it’s cheating, but we recommend that they regularly use. Many venture to go Super Ghouls’n Ghosts in one sitting? A forest of hands. The second nuance — the ability to rewind up to 45 seconds of passing. Simon Belmont died a heroic death in Super Castlevania IV? Rewind time before the fatal moment and continue to destroy the monsters as if nothing had happened.
SNES Classic Mini is not only a good retro console itself, but the work on the bugs from “small” NES. Then we — the domestic gamers — sell a piece of American childhood. And because the selection of the virtual cartridges are not at all arranged even to overseas gamers. In addition, I had to buy a second joystick and cable length thereof was too short.
At this time, Nintendo did everything right: the library project contains only the hits, the gadget fascinates concise design, and the package includes everything you need to make full use (without the USB adapter actually do). However, the device still remains relatively niche — perhaps 16-bit trinket will be interested in the average teenager or student (there’s even hacking won’t help). But his elder brother or father would. That’s what the calculation.
- package includes: console, 2 joystick, all wires needed;
- in the list of games — very often hits;
- the sleek design and compactness of the device;
- excellent build quality;
- the simplicity and ease of use;
- the ability to save at any time;
- Star Fox 2 — a real gift to fans of the series.
- European delivery, there is no USB adapter;
- the device is niche and caters for fans of retro;
- some games that are exactly the same as on the original console.
