Tablets set a new record of popularity
In the third quarter of 2017, the tablet market once again showed a decline. According to analyst firm IDC, compared with 2016, the global shipments of tablets from five major players in the market decreased by 5.4% and amounted to only 40 million units. Shipments of tablet computers are declining for the twelfth consecutive quarter — a sad record for all the giants of the market. According to IDC, this is due to the increasing demand for smartphones in combination with the increase in terms of model range renewal of the tablets and strengthening the positions of traditional PCs.
Apple remains the leader with a total share of 25.8%. Samsung reserves 15% of the market, but it is by 7.9% less compared to the same quarter last year. The South Korean manufacturer the only of the big five lost part of the market — for example, Apple strengthened its position by 11.4%.
In third place is Amazon from 10.9%. The company has shown incredible growth at 38.7%, although in absolute terms the increase in shipments is not already a large — from 3.1 to 4.4 million devices. The success of Amazon is attributed to a loyal pricing policy of the company. Huawei dropped down one position and divides the fourth place with Lenovo — they own 7.5% and 7.4% of the market respectively, but in the third quarter, both the company shipped 3 million tablets.
According to the IDC report, the market for tablet computers with plug-in keyboards is growing slower than expected. The only significant players were only Apple and Microsoft, while other manufacturers are betting on the form factor “notebooks-transformers”.
