Popular CCleaner utility was infected by a virus
Many are probably familiar with the popular utility for cleaning your PC CCleaner. It allows you to locate and remove the drive obsolete and unnecessary files. Sometimes it can help to free up a few gigabytes of free space. But suddenly it turned out that the program CCleaner was hacked. Specializing in security firm Cisco Talos discovered that the latest version of the app was infected with a virus.
The experts of Cisco Talos discovered the virus in 32-bit versions of CCleaner 5.33.6162 from 15 Aug and CCleaner Cloud 1.07.3191 from August 24. Representatives from Piriform, the developer of CCleaner, reported that the infected updates installed about 3% of users or 2.27 million people.
Malicious code sent to the attackers computer names, users, IP addresses, installed applications list and the list of network adapters. September 15, law enforcement turned off the server and started the search for hackers. The developers of Avast antivirus software claim that their software is able to protect the users who installed the infected version of CCleaner.
“Using a trust relationship between software vendors and users of this attackers can take advantage of the trust of users to the file and web servers used to distribute updates”, — commented on the situation in the Cisco Talos.
All CCleaner users should upgrade to the latest version and check their computers for malware.
