Despite the presence in all lines of smartphones Huawei models with diagonals screens for all tastes, a separate line extra large “phablet” Mate there since 2013 and feels great. Unfortunately, last Mate 8 we have not imported officially, but this does not mean that the smartphone at a special wish, it was impossible to bring from China. Mate 9 suffered the same fate, but we still managed to meet him.
Huawei Mate 9 — the flagship phablet with a large 5.9-inch IPS Full HD display, 64-bit 8-core processor of its own design, 4 GB RAM, 64 GB internal memory, a hybrid tray for two SIM cards or SIM+MicroSD. The smartphone runs on the fresh Android OS 7.0 with a proprietary shell Huawei EMUI 5.0 and equipped with double main camera.
Huawei Mate 9 definitely interesting to fans of smartphones with large screens, which is more convenient to dig around the Internets, watch movies and play games. And there are enough not only in China, we have phablets are also very popular. The smartphone features a 5.9-inch IPS screen uses a matrix with a resolution of 1920×1080. Inside was a top-end OCTA-core processor of its own design Kirin 960 graphics Mali-G71 MP8 and i6 coprocessor, which is designed to perform the most elementary tasks without using the main processor core. The smartphone is available in different versions, the base is equipped with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory, which is absolutely enough for any task. Specifically, we had a top version of MHA-AL00 with 6 GB (!) RAM and 128 GB of internal memory. The tray is able to accommodate two SIM or nano format, or one plus a memory card (although in my opinion 128 GB is plenty). Since the line P9, Huawei works together with the Leica (or simply buys the right to use the Leica logo for advertising purposes) and Huawei Mate 9 also received the corresponding dual cell. Still uses two modules: color and black-and-white for more light and information on dynamic range, but this time the black and white module has a resolution of 20 MP (instead of 12 in P9). Of course, the dual configuration allows you to take pictures with bokeh effect and change the focus point on the already finished photos.
The smartphone comes in a box of black cardboard. No colorful printing no, it’s strictly, as befits a flagship device. Only the model name and the Leica logo signature Dual Camera.
The kit is more interesting than most modern smartphones: in addition to the smartphone, the USB Type-C cable, power supply, clip and instructions in the envelope with a seal in the box there is a headset (simple, but useful to someone) adapter with USB Type-C MicroUSB and a protective bumper made of dark translucent plastic. Formally, there is also protective film, it is pasted on the screen.
In appearance, Huawei Mate 9 recognized a familiar for all the latest models, style and design. The entire front panel is covered with Gorilla Glass 3 with curved edges, frame the sides of the screen narrow. On the “chin” — the Huawei logo. Above the screen is led, front camera, a standard set of sensors and the earpiece grille. It seems that it also placed one of the microphones (their smartphone four to eliminate noise during conversations and when recording on the recorder):
The body and frame of the smartphone is made of metal. In our case — matte black. Chamfer and buttons are painted in the same color. On the right side opposite the volume button and power button. They are relatively thin, are well above the hull and are clearly pressed:
3.5 mm headphone Jack placed on the upper end. It is hosted peephole IR Blaster to control various electronics:
On the left side — a tray for SIM/MicroSD, implemented standard:
Different versions use different trays: one nanoSIM + MicroSD or hybrid option for two SIM or one plus MicroSD. We have to review the version with a hybrid pan. Although the need for MicroSD in the presence of 128 GB internal memory dubious:
On the bottom side symmetric connector USB Type-C, on the sides from which the two screws and two groups of holes with an external speaker and two microphones. The external speaker was not just loud but very loud. For the first time in my memory I set the ringtone volume is not at maximum. The quality of it is good, but not low enough (no miracles):
The smartphone is available in six different colors, with different coating back cover. There is a standard silver, gray and gold plus brown, the “ceramic” white and black (as in our survey). The entire back cover is black with a very nice matte texture. This option looks very impressive:
In the upper and lower portion of the rear panel there is a plastic insert for the normal operation of the wireless interfaces. At the top this box is NFC and one additional microphone. Below — two on the camera lens, dual flash and laser rangefinder on the sides of the lenses. Slightly to the right — options H optics Summarit 1:2.2/27 ASPH:
Under the camera module placed round the fingerprint scanner. This location of scanner used in most Huawei models. Under the screen it was placed in Huawei Mate 9 Pro Mate 9 Porsche Design and line P10. The scanner on the rear panel of the easy to unlock when removing from pockets and additional features that Huawei is actively using their smartphones:
The complete bumper is made of translucent plastic with a dark diamond-shaped pattern, looks very decent:
Assembled smartphone excellent, as befits a flagship model. As far as convenience, it’s all relative: comfortable use with one hand “shades” with such an impressive diagonal hard to tell, but the engineers managed to do Mate 9 comfortable as possible. Color options — an improvement, but matte black and I really liked it, would I have chosen if I bought 9 myself Mate. The only thing missing is a dust – and moisture protection, which is in the latest flagships of its competitors.
The smartphone has a 5.9-inch IPS screen with a resolution of 1920×1080, which corresponds to a pixel density of 373 ppi. Not a record by today’s standards, but absolutely sufficient (given the type of matrix). Due to different structures of the pixels, the picture with this resolution at such diagonal of the screen, it looks much better than it would be to similar to the characteristics of AMOLED. I personally see the individual pixels has failed, the image is bright and saturated. The screen initially pasted the protective film which gives some distortion, but even with it, the viewing angles are almost the maximum. The film has an oleophobic coating. Not the best quality, but it’s there:
Supply of brightness “by eye” is difficult to determine at the beginning of March, so it is better to trust a colorimeter.
For those who want to know more
The colorimeter showed that the maximum brightness is very impressive 548.005 CD/m2, so that the summer sun is a problem reading information will not. The brightness of the black field 0.524 CD/m2, contrast ratio: 1046:1. To adjust the color there is a standard utility with three presets and a manual setting:
Factory calibration is not perfect, but quite good. There is an expected bias towards blue. If desired, you can adjust, but the maximum brightness will be lower:
Comparison with other models:
|The name of the device||The brightness of a white field,
|The brightness of the black field,
|Huawei Mate 9||548.005||0.524||1046:1|
|Sony Xperia XZ||525.437||0.435||1208:1|
|Xiaomi Mi MAX||420.113||0.259||1622:1|
The smartphone has a top-end eight-core processor HiSilicon Kirin 960 coprocessor i6 and fresh graphics Mali-G71 MP8. In our version of the smartphone has 6 GB of RAM, which is now a kind of trend for new flagship smartphones, although Huawei itself is sure to the actual smartphone is enough and 4 GB, and I am inclined to believe. The situation reminds with 8-core processors and Qualcomm, which is proved by the example 820 first Snapdragon that the current flagship mobile processor could be Quad-core. In any case, power Huawei Mate 9 with his head enough for any application, all apps load and work very quickly as the interface. All modern games work too without problems. The only thing with the optimization of NFS: No Limits still, things are not well and automatically adjust graphics quality (and reduced resolution) is working properly not with all processors. While Kirin 960 game have not learned to work.
Built-in memory — 128 GB (in the basic version — 64 GB), so worry about the ending location is not necessary, although instead of the second SIM card you can set MicroSD. From wireless interfaces are dual band 2.4/5 GHz Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.2 LE, NFC and infrared port to control electronics. FM tuner: no (if anyone need, exactly as terrestrial TV). The GPS module works quickly, on a “cold” start on the street takes less than 10 seconds.
Powered smartphone from the built-in battery 4000 mAh, supported with quick charge Huawei SuperCharge. In practice, a large display affects the autonomy and records in this respect, the smartphone is not intended, although bad to say anything too. With tight load Huawei Mate 9 without any problems living a full day. In a sparing mode and a half, and with a proprietary power-saving modes can be achieved. Video online mobile turns a little more than 10 hours.

The smartphone is the 16-nm 64-bit processor HiSilicon Kirin 960, which consists of four high-performance cores ARM Cortex-A73 processor with a clock frequency of 2.4 GHz and four energy-efficient Cortex A53 cores that run at 1.8 GHz. They are complemented by fresh graphics accelerator GPU Mali-G71 MP8 at 900 MHz, the coprocessor i6, 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of fast internal memory UFS 2.1. The smartphone excels in synthetic benchmarks, which is to be expected:
The smartphone runs on Android OS 7.0 Nougat with a proprietary shell EMUI 5.0, which we have already considered in the review of the Huawei P8 Lite (2017). Despite the fact that the smartphone is not intended for our market, localization is all right. Of course, I had to manually install the Google services (they don’t work in China) and all the necessary permits for them. Traditionally, Huawei, sheath comfortable and nimble:
Standard desktops look familiar to EMUI. All apps and widgets are on desktops:
There is a variant with a separate menu of apps. Sort, search, and a separate section with the most used applications:
There is a choice of the scale content and different size fonts. Useful for such a diagonal measurement of the screen:
The notification curtain and switches close to stock, Huawei decided to abandon the two separate tabs:
On-device and online. Vyryvaetsya swipe down from the top of the screen:
The application Manager is typical for the company. You can close all open applications, selectively to close unnecessary, to fasten some. Displays the amount of free RAM:
There are all sorts of additional gestures to control a smartphone, including the launch applications by drawing symbols with a knuckle of a finger. Horizontal movement included two-window mode:
Window sizes can be adjusted:
The settings menu has the usual form:
Check fingerprint without any specifics:
Still scanner can perform additional actions. For example, to call the blind downwards:
Button control is also available, as with all smartphones Huawei last couple of years:
The navigation bar can be configured to add the call button for the blind. The navigation bar can be done hiding:
For one-handed operation provides reduced mode:
Phone Manager allows you to monitor mobile traffic, clean unnecessary, to enter the subscribers in the black list and enable power saving modes:
Corporate fitness utility:
And some kind of hub with all useful information, news, collections of apps. There is a suspicion that is only intended for the Chinese market. You can disable in the settings:
The main camera of the smartphone (which was created in collaboration with Leica) works similar to the P9 way: monochrome module captures more light and information on the dynamic range and the already imposed a 12 MP frame RGB module. This time the monochrome module has a resolution of 20 megapixels. Used optics SUMMARIT-H f/2.2, 27 mm EGF, has optical stabilization. The hybrid auto focus: laser focus, the evaluation of the depth and contrast of the composition. The main camera can shoot video in 4K. Front camera resolution — 8 megapixels. The camera interface is similar to the latest models. Settings are invoked by swiping from right to left, modes — left to right.
The main camera is good, images are rich and detailed. Small nuances are only in the dark:
Of course, a function of changing focus and aperture on the finished picture:
Huawei Mate 9 — a full-fledged flagship smartphone for fans of larger screens. It has a quality screen with a decent supply of brightness, very powerful hardware, which with a margin enough for today’s applications and games and a cool main camera, which, though slightly inferior Galaxy S7/S7 edge, but capable of doing really high-quality images. The smartphone is efficiently built and used good materials. The appearance would be correct to call quiet: no memorable features, but don’t. Another important advantage is the use of the latest version of Android with its own fast and functional shell. The main drawback is probably the price, which starts at $700. We have the smartphone is not officially sold and if you order from China will have a decent tax to pay and the price tag it turns out at the level of the flagships A-brands, which for the money can offer dust and moisture protection.
