Review LG G6: protected by a flagman with a large display with almost no frames
LG is not afraid of experiments, even though they are not always successful. If you remember flagship range, is really a popular and very successful was LG G2 with FullHD-screen and mechanical buttons below the main camera. Next was G3, in which the innovations appeared QHD display, laser autofocus, although the building was saved and it turned out to be flimsy. G4 replacement back cover with leather coating. The weirdest was last year’s LG G5 with dual camera and interchangeable modules, which have been trending. Modularity was implemented in a strange way, and a full G5 before us never reached, were limited to simplified LG G5se. This year’s experiments went in a slightly different direction and LG G6 turned to the others. How successful — we’ll see.
What is it?
LG G6 is a flagship smartphone with a 5.7-inch screen custom resolutions and aspect ratios, body of glass and metal with protection against dust and moisture, a powerful Qualcomm processor, 4 GB RAM, dual main camera and a ESS Sabre DAC for higher quality sound headphones.
Than it is interesting?
This year, manufacturers began experimenting with displays, LG is no exception, a so-called FullVision display (of course, the IPS, traditionally LG) 5.7 inch with custom resolution 2880х1440, which corresponds to an aspect ratio of 18:9 (2:1). The frame when it is thin, corners slightly rounded, and the width of the smartphone is comparable with a 5.2-inch at a diagonal. The screen supports Dolby Vision and HDR10, of course, need a corresponding content, which is very little. Rear is dual camera, one with an angle of 71°, the second — 125°, is the stabilizer. This point is similar to the predecessor. LG refused to plug-in modules, the case is completely made of glass and metal, and does not understand. The claimed protection against dust and water IP68 according to 60529 standard (submersible up to 1.5 meter for 30 minutes) and impact resistance MIL-STD-810G. For fans to use a smartphone as a player, there are good news: the 3.5 mm Jack on the place, and for the sound ESS Sabre ES9218+. In fact, SoC-all-in-one specifically for smartphones. From the point of view of the insides of the case a little more modest: it is already not the flagship, but very fit the Quad Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 at 2.35 GHz (MSM8996) graphics Adreno 530, 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory expandable.
As materials of the case, the developers chose glass and metal. Almost the entire area of the front surface (80.7% to be exact) is a 5.7-inch IPS-display with a resolution of FullVision 2880х1440 (18:9) and rounded corners. Despite the thinness of the outer limits, there is also a black interior, as the Xiaomi Mi5, for example, but in the case of LG G6 it is thinner and neater. Unlike most modern smartphones, LG decided not to use rounded 2.5 D glass front panel is totally flat. A matter of taste, don’t see anything wrong with it, exactly as good. But the savings on the glass a little surprised: the screen is protected by Gorilla Glass 3, while as relevant now already the fifth generation. Moreover, it is used for the back cover. Above the screen is the front camera, sensors and earpiece. Under the screen is a small, neat logo LG. Haters gonna hate, as they say, it is absolutely not annoying.
The frame is entirely made of metal, on the perimeter, both the front and the back is polished chamfer. The volume buttons are separate, large and also made of metal. They are on the left side, just above one of the plastic inserts for the antennas (smartphone them dotted around the perimeter):
From 3.5-mm connector LG refuses even with the waterproof housing. It is logical, moreover, that one of the chips of the smartphone is just the sound in the headphones. He is not placed in the most convenient place is on the upper end. Although it is not critical. There’s also two plastic inserts and a second microphone:
Tray on the left side:
It combined. Or 2xNanoSIM or NanoSIM+MicroSD:
At the bottom of the mobile — external speaker under the three oval holes, USB Type-C and microphone:
The rear panel is made from curved Gorilla Glass 5 textured, the smartphone is available in white, black and platinum color. The latter looks really interesting. The fingerprints, but on the bright options is almost not visible. Below is the logo LG G6:
The layout of the cameras flash button and turn on the scanner the same LG G5 and judging by the reactions of others, is very similar to the face of the robot:
The smartphone was convenient: the width and the shape of the hull fit well in the hand, thanks to the rough surface of the metal frame smartphone tries not to fall out of his hands. The Assembly was all fine, even considering that this is an engineering sample, which (judging by the abundance of scratches on the screen) are pretty experienced to me. Short-term immersion in water smartphone with no problems experienced. As for the military standard MIL-STD-810G, it offers protection on a number of criteria: high, low temperature, pressure, humidity, vibration, drops and lots of other things, details on Wikipedia. Drop engineering sample I decided not to, but (theoretically) break it down.
How good is the screen?
5.7-inch IPS-display with a resolution of FullVision 2880х1440 (18:9) and rounded corners is 80.7% of the front panel. Pixel density of 564 ppi, it is protected by Gorilla Glass 3 with good oleophobic coating. To judge by the engineering sample is not necessary, but “by eye” the picture is smooth, with a nice color and maximum viewing angles. As mentioned above, supported HDR10 and Dolby Vision, though this is more for the future.
There are Always-on Display. By itself, the feature is useful, but when using the IPS screen, it “eats” more than the AMOLED, but not essential:
In addition to the standard brightness you can customize the information on the Always-on Display and the so-called “Comfort mode” (the blue filter) with multiple modes. Setting color no.
Display non-standard aspect ratio, but with the interface everything is in order, for the proper functioning of applications and games provided by the utility to select zoom mode. Separately you can configure for each application in the appropriate menu. With applications, everything is in order with the games a little worse, but is also quite viable:

Measurements with a colorimeter showed that the maximum brightness is not a record for IPS screens 358.716 CD/m2, although in the bright sun with the clearness, everything is in order. The brightness of the black field — 0.229 CD/m2 and a high contrast — 1566:1. Perhaps the question specific sample, and perhaps a conscious decision to reduce the minimum brightness, and therefore power consumption when enabled, Always-on Display. Calibration is not the best: an essential too much blue and lack of red. The picture cold, then again, perhaps a feature of the engineering sample:
Comparison with competitors:
How are things going with performance, memory, sound and battery life?
LG G6 is already not a top, but a powerful 64-bit Quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 with a graphics accelerator Adreno 530. RAM — 4GB LPDDR4, shell and all applications run, run and switch very quickly. Chip and Android since 7.0 has native support for Vulkan API, so with modern games smartphone copes without problems. The issue with non-standard aspect ratio screen. For the most part proprietary tool to cope, but sometimes (for example, in Need For Speed No Limits) the picture is slightly cropped, and virtual buttons do not coincide with operation of the sensor. I think that it is in the test firmware in the future everything will be OK:
The smartphone has 64 GB of internal memory, I think that for most users this will be enough. Or at least to abandon one of the SIM cards and insert a MicroSD.
Now a few words about the sound. The situation is the following: Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 your AQSTIC with support for 192 kHz / 24 bit, which is positioned as a quality. It is good, but no more. More interesting further: the smartphone installed in a separate SoC a fancy Hi-Fi Quad Sabre ESS ES9218+, which includes dual-channel DAC, amplifiers and other necessary piping. Supported up to 32-bit 384kHz PCM. Interestingly, it is not necessary to use (although it is stupid). It is marketed as “audiophile” and using it disables the ability to use EQ, which is quite logical. This in conjunction with T-Peos H-300 (link to review) and new top DUNU hybrids DK-3001 (review next week), we can say that the sound is really good, one of the best in smartphones. It would be interesting to compare with Meizu PRO 6 Plus, but this possibility, unfortunately no:
The recorder is also a fancy: can write FLAC, there is a preset for recording gigs and private settings with sensitivity and filters of different frequencies for different environment. There is indication of “clip” and level channels. And Yes, mono/stereo switch automatically when you rotate from vertical to horizontal position. Similar is for movie and it all really works:
The smartphone is equipped with Wi-Fi ac/a/b/g/n (2.4 and 5 GHz), Bluetooth 4.2 LE and NFC. For the full stuffing only lacks the IR port. The smartphone runs with global positioning systems (GPS supported A-GPS), GLONASS, module operation is no problem:
LG G6 includes a battery, 3300 mAh, supported with quick charge Quick Charge 3.0. Video smartphone you are able to turn around 8.5 hours. In real conditions I can plant per day was not possible. This is with about an hour of talking, always-on Internet and, consequently, synchronization of all plus about an hour of games and the social. networking/web surfing. Very nice.
For those who want to know more
The smartphone has a 64-bit 14-nanometer processor Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 with four custom Kryo cores clocked at 2.35 GHz, plus a graphics accelerator Adreno 530. RAM 4 GB LPDDR4 uses a built — 64GB type is UFS2.0. Smartphone shows quite high results in synthetic benchmarks, but actual flagships of competitors already does not hold. The caveat is that the test firmware does not allow to run tests with Internet, so that comparison is not formed, and some tests and all failed:
What firmware and UI?
The smartphone uses Android 7.0 Nougat with shell UX 6.0, it has a lot of small Goodies basket type for apps and photos, which allows you to recover casually remote photos, for example. Built-in utility for recording phone calls and a lot of things. Supported widgets, different scrolling animation and different variants of desktops:
There are close to a standard with a separate apps menu, kitaevedeniya and simplified:
You can change themes, grid sizes, labels, and font:
Blind done very carefully, there is a possibility of editing and advanced features. For example — a piece of annotated screenshot:
The ability to use additional buttons in the navigation bar and change its color:
The settings menu has two possible. Standard single list or split into separate tabs:
Application Manager cards, as usual. There is a separate button to switch to multi mode. At this ratio of the screen it is quite easy:
With security features and prints everything is clear. The scanner works fine:
There are still additional Smart Settings. It is an automatic launch apps or change anything in the settings depending on the location, headphones or Bluetooth devices:
Double click on the volume buttons you can assign to launch apps:
In addition to the standard functions when connected to the cable have the option of charging the device from a smartphone:
Plus branded applications, including Manager, mobile optimization, FM radio and a fitness app that in one click you can link with Google Fit:
On the hull did a good job. It is comfortable, functional, fast. Personally, I like it much better than the versions in previous models.
How are things with the camera?
LG G6 is a dual camera, each module 13 megapixels. A single module with standard optics 71° and an aperture of f/1.8, the second wide viewing angle of 125° and an aperture of f/2.4. Used Sony IMX258. Is phase detection autofocus, dual flash and optical stabilization (although, as I understand it, only in “normal” camera). Writes video in UHD, there is a TimeLapse and slow motion. Front camera of 5 megapixels with an angle of 100°. The camera application has been significantly redesigned and it is made very cleverly, I must say. Everything is convenient, has a fully manual modes with adjustable just like photos and videos (directly it is possible to adjust the microphones). On the main screen covers all the main controls, including switching between cameras. There are filters, stray is convenient for sharing on social networks directly from the app and video editor, with which you can slow down individual segments of the video. The only thing that did not like HDR modes are not switched in the viewfinder, only settings. So you used only the automatic mode. There is a separate mode with square photos, which I use and not invented.
The camera is really very good, in good light both cameras work perfectly. Night quality shirokougolki falls and it is significantly worse than the standard. Sometimes too aggressive works “noise reduction” and fine details get a little chashevidnymi. But all in all was really good, like. Yes, wide angle camera makes the size 8 megapixels.
Slow motion after editor:
It seems that this time LG experiments was successful. They are not as unusual as the predecessors and this has a positive impact on the smartphone. LG G6 was very pleasant to use, comfortable and balanced smartphone. He is well built from quality materials, and the width of the screen 5.7 inch commensurate with a 5.2-inch models. It complements the ingress protection standard IP68 and MIL-STD 810G. The screen is very cool looking and convenient to use them due to the unusual aspect ratio and minimal framework, plus a useful bonus in the form of Always-on-Display. Yes, he has not the best range of brightness and calibration, but not fatal. Also a little frustrating to use last year’s flagship platform, as a result — far from a record performance, but for the comfort of this is enough. Very pleased with the main camera, which is really very well-off, very good battery life and the audio chip ESS Sabre ES9218+, which is very steep by the standards of smartphones sound. The main obstacle on the path to purchase will be the price in UAH 22000, which although lower than the competitor-compatriot, but in absolute terms still high.
