Scientists learned how to make any surface touch

Researchers from the University Carnegie Mellon has introduced a technology that allows you to “draw” touchpad on virtually any surface. This method is suitable for large touch panels and, most importantly, it does not require large expenditures. The new system is called Electrick.

Researchers from the University Carnegie Mellon has introduced a technology that allows you to “draw” touchpad on virtually any surface. This method is suitable for large touch panels and, most importantly, it does not require large expenditures. The new system is called Electrick.
How it works
The first object is applied a thin layer of conductive paint, and the edges of the painted area of the fixed electrodes. Using the principle electropolis tomography, the authors of the project passed the current through the pair of closest electrodes and measured the voltage at the other ends. When a finger touches occur leakage current and changes in voltages you can calculate the coordinates of the point of contact. The main disadvantage of the technology is its low accuracy to a centimeter, although in some situations this will be enough (for example, if you press the button or make a swipe).
The researchers tested the system Electrick on flat surfaces, guitar, toys and even a jelly model of the brain, and they created the cover allows you to operate the smartphone through gestures. The painted surface will react to touch, even if the top is to apply a protective coating.
Alternatives
Objects of complex shapes can be made touch-sensitive with cameras and depth sensors that will track the movements of user’s hands. One of invariantov system, called Worldkit was introduced in 2013. However, this is not always convenient because the user can accidentally close the review.
