Dark streaks on Mars are not from the current water

It seems that the astronomers made a mistake: dark streaks on Mars, discovered by scientists quite recently, can be caused by not running water, and dry landslides. It will cause great damage to the theory of the existence of microbial life on the red planet.

About two years ago the pictures of Mars were spotted dark stripes with a width of from a half to five meters, which the astronomers took to the streams. This theory was then confirmed by NASA, saying that the dark strip is the water, protruding from under the planet’s surface.

However, the results of a new study indicate that the sandy scree, which are formed without any liquid. This statement was made by some scientists, published an article in the journal Nature Geoscience.

What happens there?

On the surface of Mars there is a large number of small-scale surface changes, including the formation of spider-like furrows and the appearance of dark streaks on slopes (RSL, Recurring Slope Lineae — appearing slope streaks). Last observed in the warm season, disappear after stop growing, and appear again in a year. In 2015, these bands some scientists have called the best evidence that on the surface of Mars at least temporarily, but there is liquid water. However, always be there it may not, due to unsuitable values of pressure and temperature.

In their study astrophysics analyzed more than 151 of the strip 10 of 50 places of observation, and found that the bands occur only on slopes with an angle greater than 27 degrees and abruptly end when you reach the slope angle.

Scientists from the U.S. Geological survey decided to learn more about slope streaks. That’s what they say: “We thought about RSL as on the possible flows of liquid water, but they are more like dry sand, says lead author Colin Dundas. — A new understanding RSL supports other evidence that modern Mars is very dry.” In the new work, the researchers show that the slope of all RSL indistinguishable from the slope of the sand dunes, which describes the movement over the granular medium.

All this means that water will likely not participated in the formation of these structures, since the longer strips requires more water. However, all 151 RSL investigated over similar slopes, despite the fact that their lengths are very different. It is also unlikely that the water only appears on the tops of the slopes, and if it was, then these bands would have formed on steep slopes, which is not observed.

So life on Mars?

“Again we were unlucky” — you say. If the statement of the scientists are true, it would cast doubt on the theory that Mars may be microbial life. But astronomers still have to prove their assumption, because now it has a lot of unresolved issues.

The researchers do not deny that the appearance of structures may participate in salt water, but it is probably slightly. According to them, the liquid on Mars today may be limited by the traces of dissolved moisture from the atmosphere and thin layers of water. However, much is not explained, for example, the seasonal appearance of streams.

But, as we have seen many times, often scientists can also be wrong. Maybe life on Mars is still there. No wonder that Elon Musk is going to create there a colony!!!
