Beijing: electric cars vs smog (5 photo + 2 video)
The inhabitants of cities know firsthand what I could. But one thing used to breathe air filled with car exhaust and industrial emissions, and quite another to see such a megapolis like Beijing, barely visible from the height of bird flight through the gray haze of smog.
The welfare of the Chinese people has inevitably led to the appearance on the streets of Chinese cities more and more car and as a result, increasing air pollution. The world health organization (who) have developed standards for maximum permissible levels of air pollution, when it becomes the breath of life, and threatens suffocation.
22 Dec 2015, this level was exceeded in Beijing 25 times! Photos of the city covered with a dense layer of smog, bypassed all the world’s media, and the Chinese authorities red alert was the signal for the development of a whole system of measures for the improvement of the airspace of the capital and the largest cities of the country.
One such measure was the fact that the new taxis in Beijing will be used only electric vehicles. Moreover, the entire Metropolitan taxi fleet, which comprise as many as about 70 thousand cars will be gradually replaced by vehicles with electric motors.
This, of course, will cost a pretty penny, or rather, according to preliminary calculations, at $1.3 billion, not to mention the increase in the number of charging stations in the capital of China. And though electric car costs almost twice what a conventional car of the same class with internal combustion engines, the authorities are determined to stay the course.
However, this is unlikely to help radically change the situation with the smog, because the main contribution to it give numerous factories located in the city and polluting the atmosphere with their emissions.
However, the solution to the problem of smog can’t be put off because of the deteriorated state of health of citizens, including those born in such conditions children. There is a decrease of immunity in the population of Beijing and other major industrial centers, the increase in the number of deaths suffering from diseases of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems, and just older people.
For the purification of urban air offers the most extravagant projects. For example, Given Regarde, designer from the Netherlands, developed and presented a giant air filter for the purification of the urban atmosphere, can remove up to 30 thousand cubic meters of air per hour. Creative approach were evident here: particles that will settle on the filter, the developer has proposed to use to create jewelry.
