Discovered a new source of gravitational waves
Scientists of the LIGO scientific laboratory first tracked the source of the gravitational waves that originated the connection of two neutron stars. Is this source “close to us” — in the constellation Hydra on the outskirts of the galaxy NGC 4993. From the Solar system it is 130 million light years. The observation is interesting in the first place, the fact that the previously known sources of gravitational waves were only black holes.
Earlier experts predicted cosmic catastrophe resulted in the release into space of some heavy metals, including platinum and gold. Watching the process, the researchers had the most solid at the moment, the evidence that short gamma-ray bursts result in the merger of neutron stars.
At the end of this process, as well as the explosion of bulanovoi released significant elements of chemical and radioactive. They diverge at a speed equal to one-fifth of the same indicator light. Faster than with any other explosion of stars, just a few days, celonova turns from bright blue to rich red.
Stefano Covino, the first published article on this subject in Astronomy, Nature claims that scientists received information is consistent with the theoretical data. For theorists this is a victory. Events that almost simultaneously registered installation LIGO and space Observatory “Integral” with the “Fermi”, it is real. New gravitational waves called GW170817.
