India commissioned the first train called DEMU (Diesel Electric Multiple Unit) equipped with solar panels. The project was a state-owned company Indian Railways, and the launch of the diesel trains was present railway Minister of India Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu.
The train departed from the station of Safdarjung and will continue to operate on a circular route in new Delhi. There are six cars with solar panels located on the roof. The movement of trains is carried out using diesel engines, but the electrical, control system, systems of opening of doors, and a Bulletin Board receive electricity produced by the solar panels.
One car is 16 solar plates, each with power of 300 watts. At night, the power supply comes from batteries. As stated by the office of the company Indian Railways, one train with solar panels will save up to 21 thousand liters of diesel fuel per year, while savings will amount to 21 thousand dollars. The equipment of one car with solar panels is estimated at 14 million dollars. The train will travel at a speed of 80 km/h.
The DEMU train is part of the state program of the Indian Ministry of Railways for the improvement of environmental situation and reduction of harmful emissions into the atmosphere. A comprehensive program involves the use of biofuels, wind energy, recycling water, installing toilets in trains. Moreover, the public transport network plans by 2020 to increase the production of photovoltaic electricity to 1,000 MW, and by 2025 — 5000 MW.
