2020 Global Smartwatch Shipments To Grow 28.6-Percent From 2019

According to a new report from TrendForce, global smartwatch shipments are expected to grow in 2020 from their overall number in 2019.

The report states that the increase will be at a rate of 28.6-percent. It also notes that growth will be in large part due to the popularity of the Apple Watch. As well as the decreased prices of earlier versions of that particular device.

More watches from other manufacturers are also a factor. TrendForce states that these two things will play a major role in the increase in shipments for next year.

Global smartwatch shipments are expected to hit 80.55 million units

28.6-percent is a pretty decent increase, and really any increase is better than none at all. That doesn’t exactly give the best picture though of how many watches that actually is.

The report notes that 2020’s projected shipment number will be in the realm of 80.55 million units. That’s compared to the overall number that’s expected for 2019, which is expected to be around 62.63 million units by the end of the year.

Again, the Apple Watch is attributed to the majority of the growth for the smartwatch market. This is according to Jason Tsai, the analyst for wearable devices at TrendForce. If you follow smartwatches at all, and even if you don’t, there’s no denying the popularity of the Apple Watch.

It’s the most heavily advertised and chances are you’ve seen them more often in public than other brands. This also says something about the state of other platforms like Wear OS, or Samsung’s smartwatches such as the Galaxy Watch Active 2. Though they hold some weight and are still loved by many, they in no way compare, and it’s reflecting in the numbers.

Units shipped are thought to be over 100 million by 2022

80.55 million sounds like a lot, and it is, but it’s not 100 million or more. TrendForce expects that it won’t take too much longer though to hit that particular number. The 100 million milestone for smartwatch units shipped is expected to be reached by 2022.

What’s more is that Jason Tsai thinks shipped units will exceed that number by a decent amount. More specifically, around 113 million units all told by the end of 2022.

That being the case points to smartwatches only continuing to become more the norm. That’s also assuming that smartwatch popularity, as well as mainstream desire, continues to increase. It seems like that won’t be much of a hurdle if things continue on the path they’re on.
