Alienware revives the m18 gaming laptop for its 2023 refresh

Alienware is reviving the m18, a gaming laptop with a behemoth-sized 18-inch screen. A laptop it teased back in early December. The new m18 is part of Alienware’s 2023 refresh announced at CES 2023. In fact it’s actually one of six new gaming laptops that Alienware owner Dell plans to put out this year. The others include the Alienware m16, x16, and x14, and the Dell G16 and G15.

This newly diverse lineup is poised to offer gamers a range of options at varying price points. And Alienware says the upgrades are anything but small. With the laptops featuring “updated form factors and materials, best-in-class performance upgrades, design and comfort enhancements, as well as an overhauled Alienware Command Center.”

Of course, the standout is the m18. Alienware’s biggest gaming laptop in about 8 years, with some big performance in tow.

The Alienware m18 is the company’s most powerful gaming laptop ever

Alienware has always been known for pricey machines with powerhouse performance. And the m18 hardly deviates from this formula. It’s the company’s most powerful laptop to date and features not only a large screen, but arguably nearly desktop-grade performance. This is all thanks to components like the NVIDIA RTX 4090 GPUs, as well as Intel’s 13th generation Core i9-13980X processors. There will be configurations with the latest AMD GPUs and CPUs too.

There are also going to be other, less powerful configurations available starting with an RTX 4050. RAM will start at 16GB and go all the way up to 64GB, with storage options including 256GB in single storage and going up to a whopping 9TB if you go for a quad storage configuration. The laptop can have either a QHD+ display at 165Hz or an FHD+ display at 480Hz, and there’s a veritable smorgasbord of ports for connecting everything you might need.

This includes ethernet, a headset jack, and two USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports on the left, and one USB-C 3.2 Gen 1 port on the right. Most of the ports though are located on the back. Where you’ll find the power port, two USB Type-C (Thunderbolt 4.0) ports, another USB Type-A 3.2 Gen 1 port, an HDMI 2.1 port, a mini DisplayPort connection, and an SD card slot.

If 18-inches is too much to handle, there are other options

Alienware 2023 Gaming Laptop Refresh

Regardless of how powerful it might be, the m18 is not going to be small. Or light for that matter. The truth is most people want a laptop (to some degree) for its portability. And the m18 isn’t really going to be touted for portability. At least not compared to other smaller gaming laptops. Though it will certainly be more portable than carting a desktop around.

For those that want something smaller and more lightweight, any of the other options announced today will probably fit the bill. Both the x16 and m16 will come with many of the same configs, although the x16 can only come with up to 4TB of storage. The x16 also only goes up to 32GB of RAM while the m16 matches what the m18 offers.

Then there’s the x14 as well as both of Dell’s new offerings. In terms of portability, the x14 R2 might be the best bet. It’s thinner than last year’s x14 R1 and comes with a new and improved display with a QHD+ resolution and a 265Hz refresh rate.
