ARCore Update Adds Support For More Devices, Including OnePlus 6T

In short: A teardown of the latest version of the ARCore by Google app has revealed a number of new devices that look likely to be next in line to gain ARCore support. Interestingly, the list of now-supported devices also includes devices that have yet to be announced, such as the OnePlus 6T.

Background: ARCore is essentially the backbone of Google’s solution for augmented reality (AR) apps and therefore devices which gain ARCore support will be able to take advantage of the new wave of AR-based apps and games that come through based on Google’s platform. While that will be good news for owners of devices including Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9, Huawei’s Mate 10 Pro, the ROG Phone from ASUS, and the Razor Phone (as they are all listed as supported in the latest app version), the support seems to also be extended to include the OnePlus 6T, the Nokia 9 and the ‘Nokia Phoenix,’ which are all currently unannounced smartphones. As well as another Nokia-branded phone that could not be identified, and possible a new variant of the Vivo Nex. New device support aside, the app on the Google Play Store is listed as being updated yesterday and also includes a number of improvements, such as support for passthrough camera auto focus, better plane detection speed, and greater computer vision support for image resolutions.

Impact: The profiles noted here are specific to version 1.5 of the ARCore app and have been noted at the code level, and therefore have not officially been confirmed by Google as supported devices as of yet. However, providing the code references are correct then owners of any of the phones listed (full list here) should be able to download the ARCore app from the Google Play Store in due course, if not already. As for the unannounced devices, while not a proper confirmation, this would suggest those phones will arrive to market as devices that have already been ARCore approved and ready to take advantage of Google’s AR platform from the get-go. Which in the case of the OnePlus 6T should not be that much of a surprise considering older OnePlus models have already received their support, including the new phone’s predecessor, the OnePlus 5T, which gained its support in June of this year when version 1.3 of the app rolled out.
