Best Of IFA 2019 – LG G8X ThinQ

LG’s take on a foldable phone is the most practical we’ve seen

LG came to IFA 2019 with a bit of a surprise up its sleeve. Typically, ahead of a trade show, smartphones that are due to be announced leak out pretty extensively. But the G8X ThinQ did not. We expected something from LG, but weren’t sure what. And LG surprised us. Something that’s hard to do these days.

The LG G8X ThinQ is just what the name implies, an iteration of the LG G8 ThinQ that was released earlier this year. That’s not a bad thing. LG took some chances with the G8 ThinQ and learned from what it did, making the G8X ThinQ an even better smartphone.

LG made the right choice in ditching Air Gestures for a Dual Display

With the LG V50 ThinQ that it announced earlier this year, LG debuted its Dual Display add-on for the device. Technically, that makes the phone a foldable phone. It’s not the best looking foldable phone we’ve seen, seeing as it is using two displays inside, but it is going to be the cheapest and most practical.

The second display clips onto the G8X ThinQ just like a case. This is using pogo pins on the back of the phone. Then you are able to put an app on the second screen and another on the main display. Unfortunately, most apps are not going to work on both screens at the same time.

This is pretty common for phones that come out with some pretty innovative features, as apps need to be coded to work with these new features.

LG did ditch the G8 ThinQ’s Air Gestures that used the Time of Flight sensor on the front of the device. This is a good thing. Those Air Gestures were pretty difficult to actually use. Once you got the hang of it, it was pretty cool. But getting the hang of it, was not a fast process.

Thanks to LG ditching the Air Gestures, it was able to slim down the notch on the G8X ThinQ. So now it is simply a teardrop notch for the front-facing camera. Since the earpiece is still under the display.

LG continues to show off its camera prowess

Even though the G8X ThinQ only has a dual-camera setup, LG is still showing off its camera prowess. This time, it has a big focus on the front-facing camera.

LG has a 32-megapixel front-facing camera with a “Reflector Mode”. This mode is going to keep your selfies sharp and remove blur. Seeing as front-facing cameras are usually pretty sub-par, especially in low-light, this is going to be a pretty impressive feature.

The G8X ThinQ retains the ultrawide sensor that everyone loves, which is a 13-megapixel sensor. While the main sensor is a 12-megapixel camera.

In the past few years, LG has silently been killing the camera game. Being the first to offer up an ultrawide camera on the back of its phone, and really pushing the industry towards using one. To being one of the first to offer three cameras on their phones. LG has done really well in the camera department, and it’s good to see them getting even better.

The LG G8X ThinQ might be an “iterative” update to the G8 ThinQ by name, but it is not an iterative update when you look at everything that’s changed here. And that is why LG has earned our Best Of IFA 2019 award this year.
