Best Of IFA 2020: ZTE Axon 20 5G

The ZTE Axon 20 5G ushers in new technology to the smartphone world, an under-display camera.

The ZTE Axon 20 5G is one of the most interesting smartphones that launched this year, which is why we’ve decided to hand it one of our Best of IFA 2020 awards. That phone is so interesting for one main reason… its selfie camera. That is not your regular selfie camera, but an under-display one. We’ll talk more about that soon, as that is the phone’s main feature, but not its only one, of course. The ZTE Axon 20 5G is a solid smartphone all around. Not only does it offer premium build, but its specs are also spot on.

The ZTE Axon 20 5G has really thin bezels, almost non-existing ones. It is made out of metal and glass, and it looks nice no matter what way you look at it. The phone also comes with one of Qualcomm’s best mid-range processors, which allows it to support 5G connectivity. ZTE did not skimp out on the battery either, by the way. Before we get to any of that, let’s talk about the star of the show, the phone’s under-display camera.

ZTE Axon 20 5G shows class by hiding the selfie camera under the display

Needless to say, not many people like notches and display holes. People did get used to those already, because they’re all over the place, but that doesn’t mean they like them. Pretty much everyone would prefer to have access to the full screen real estate, without obstructions in the form of display holes and notches. Well, the ZTE Axon 20 5G offers just that, without having you deal with moving parts at the same time.

The ZTE Axon 20 5G is not the first full-screen smartphone we’ve seen. The OnePlus 7 Pro, for example, offered a pop-up selfie camera, so that it can trim down the bezels. Several other phones did as well. Many people did not really like that as the pop-up camera is a moving part, and it scares some users, to be quite honest. They’re worried about it breaking and what not. Well, that’s not something you have to deal with when it comes to under-display cameras, it’s your regular camera, but placed under the display.

ZTE utilizes Visionox’s technology here. How it works? Well, the moment you launch a camera app and switch to the selfie camera, the part of the display where the camera is located becomes see-through. That allows the camera to capture a selfie, or whatever you need it to do. Once you exit an app, or switch to the rear-facing camera setup, the display will revert back to its regular form. You can expect many phones with such tech to be introduced in 2021.

The phone also offers a high refresh rate display. Powerful SoC & more

The ZTE Axon 20 5G is not exactly a flagship-grade smartphone. It comes with the Snapdragon 765G from Qualcomm. That is a mid-range processor, though a very capable one. Add that to the fact that the phone includes a 6.92-inch fullHD+ display with a 90Hz refresh rate, and you’ll get a really nice idea as to what the phone is all about. ZTE also included plenty of RAM inside here, and the latest version of Android. ZTE’s UI does come pre-installed, though.

All of that is powered by a 4,220mAh battery, which should be more than enough to fuel this phone. ZTE did enable 30W fast wired charging here, though wireless charging is not included. The phone comes in a range of color options, though it’s currently available in China only.

ZTE is yet to announce this phone’s global availability details (as of writing this article). The ZTE Axon 20 5G will become a globally-available smartphone, according to everything we’ve heard thus far, and its name as well. Axon-branded phones usually reach various markets across the globe. There you go, the ZTE Axon 20 5G is one of our Best of IFA 2020 picks.
