BlizzCon Won’t Be Happening This Year

If you were hoping to attend BlizzCon 2021 later this year, you’re out of luck because the show has been cancelled. Blizzard confirmed the details today in a post on its official site.

While this is probably disappointing for fans, Blizzard seems to have a good reason. Stating that it is past the date where it can deliver an event that carries the quality its fans expect. This is the second year in a row Blizzard is cancelling the official BlizzCon convention. Which the studio has held nearly every single year since 2005, save for 2006, 2012, and 2020. Blizzard did however hold BlizzConline earlier this year as a sort of stand-in for missing last year’s event. Where it announced more details for Diablo Immortal, as well as World Of Warcraft Burning Crusade Classic, Diablo IV and various other games.

But rather than leave things at a simple, “we won’t be holding BlizzCon this year,” Blizzard has laid out its intentions for the show going forward. While also offering up a few more words as to the reason for the cancellation.

BlizzCon 2021 was cancelled due to ongoing issues with the Coronavirus pandemic

A big reason for the cancellation is ongoing issues with the pandemic. Blizzard states that creating a BlizzCon event at the scale fans have come to know and love takes a lot of work.

Requiring months of preparation for people both at Blizzard and outside of the company. This includes creators, Esports pros, production partners and more. But ongoing complexities and uncertainties of the pandemic have “impacted Blizzard’s ability to move forward on many of these fronts.”

To tide fans over, Blizzard plans to hold a combination digital and in-person event in the early part of next year. It will be similar in fashion to this year’s BlizzConline, but with both online events and smaller in-person gatherings. As opposed to an entirely online event.

Details have not yet been shared about specific timing, but Blizzard’s Executive Producer of BlizzCon Saralyn Smith says that more details will be shared soon. This will also be a “global event,” though it wasn’t specified if this would include the in-person gatherings.
