Disable Your Adblocker If You’re Having Formatting Issues With Google Docs

If you have been facing any layout or formatting issues with some Google Workspace tools such as Google Docs and Slides, you might want to disable your adblocker right away. Adblockers have recently made some changes that are causing these issues. Disabling adblockers or allowing exceptions for the affected Google Workspace tools should fix the problem.

Some Google productivity tools, primarily Google Docs and Slides, are having issues where the text might shift around the document, covering other elements on the page or throwing itself off-screen. Sometimes text could overlay itself, resulting in an unrecognizable double-printing litter. Text boxes in Slides also randomly shift to the center or to the edge. In some cases, the issue even prevents users from editing the document entirely.

Reports of these issues have been growing rapidly over the past few days. Many users have taken to online forums such as Reddit as well as social media to spit out their frustration. It’s an odd bug but appears to be quite widespread. Of course, not everyone using an ad blocker is encountering this issue. But for those affected, it’s a pretty damaging problem as it prevents them from working efficiently.

Initially, it was unclear what was the root cause of the issue. People thought Google Docs and Slides are having some issues of their own. But it turns out ad blockers are the main culprit. Since ad blockers disable and modify certain in-page content for blocking ads, of course, they could be wrongly identifying some portions of the documents, resulting in this problem.

Google Docs and Slides layout issues are caused by your adblocker

Google Drive Product Manager Remy Burger pointed that adblockers have implemented some changes recently. He specifically mentioned AdBlock and EasyList, whose blocklists are used by most adblockers. Those changes are now causing these layout and formatting issues on Google Docs and Slides. “Unfortunately, it’s out of our control,” Burger said.

AdBlock was also quick to acknowledge this, saying there’s an issue with one of the primary filter lists. They are already working on a fix so it shouldn’t be too long before everything gets back to normal. For some people, opening documents in Incognito mode in Chrome resolves the problem. However, this could be because they have ad blockers or other extensions disabled in this mode. So, for the time being, it might be the safest option to completely disable the ad blocker on your device until a proper fix arrives.
