Entry-level Snapdragon 480 Chipset Enables 5G To Reach More People

Qualcomm has unveiled the all-new Snapdragon 480 5G mobile platform. In September last year, the company had announced its plans to launch the first-ever Snapdragon 4-series chipset with 5G support in Q1 2021. While the company just revealed the Snapdragon 480 SoC (SM4350), the smartphones powered by this new chipset will be launching later this quarter.

For the 5G connectivity, the chipset will come equipped with the Snapdragon X51 5G Modem-RF System. It supports not just sub-6GHz 5G bands but also mmWave 5G bands. The 5G modem on this chipset will offer peak download speeds of up to 2.5 Gbps and peak upload speeds of up to 660 Mbps.

Moreover, it also supports standalone (SA) and non-standalone (NSA) 5G modes. Not just 5G, the Snapdragon 480 also features several firsts in the Snapdragon 4-series. It is the first Snapdragon 4-series chipset to be built on an 8nm node. The Snapdragon 480 is also only the second chipset from Qualcomm to sport a triple ISP.

The flagship Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 is the first mobile platform to have the same implementation. With the Qualcomm FastConnect 6200, the chipset also gets support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1. And it supports dual-frequency GNSS (L1 and L5 bands) for improving location accuracy.

Connectivity isn’t the only thing getting an improvement. This new chipset is also much improved in terms of performance. The Kryo 460 CPU features 2x Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2.0GHz and 6x Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1.8GHz. While the Snapdragon 460 came with Adreno 610 GPU, the new Snapdragon 480 includes a much powerful Adreno 619 GPU.

It also supports Quick Charge 4+  fast charging technology

According to Qualcomm, the CPU and GPU on the Snapdragon 480 will offer double the performance of its predecessor. It supports LPDDR4x RAM and storage capacity from eMMC and UFS. The triple 14-bit Spectra 345 ISPs will add support for recording videos simultaneously through three different cameras.

Notably, the chipset can support a single 64MP camera or dual 25MP + 13MP setup with Zero Shutter Lag and up to 1080p 60fps video recording. It even has Quick Charge 4+ support for fast wired charging speeds, the first-ever Snapdragon 4-series chip to do so.

OnePlus and OPPO have already mentioned being working on new smartphones powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 480 5G mobile platform. While no exact time frame is specified, Snadpargpn 480-powered should be hitting the market in the next couple of months. These new budget smartphones will surely provide the next-gen 5G connectivity to masses all around the world.
