Essential Rolling Out PH-1 July Security, Android P Beta Updates

Essential is now shipping out a slew of updates to its PH-1 handset including an Android security patch, improvements to Android Auto, and an updated developer preview for Android P. That’s according to a recent tweet from the company’s official page. The specifics of the enhancements for Android Auto remain relatively vague, at this point. However, the security update appears to be following just behind Google’s own update for its Pixel and Nexus devices – which also began rolling out today, July 2. That’s a relatively quick turnaround, bringing the build number to OPM1.180104.267 and the security patch level to 2018-07. While the update won’t necessarily include all of those found in the latest Android security release notes, it will likely incorporate all eight of the fixes for critical security vulnerabilities associated with Qualcomm hardware. Moreover, it should also bring fixes for the remaining 24 high-level security issues.

Beyond security, Essential is also beginning a rollout of an update to its Android P Developer Preview build. That update will arrive in a similar time-frame for users who happen to be on the beta program and will contain nearly identical improvements. In addition to those improvements and security enhancements, the smartphone manufacturer says it is including the latest Google ‘code drops.’ That most likely means that the new beta is in-line with the latest add-ins to the Developer Preview. The list for that isn’t necessarily a long one but it does include several improvements and preparation for future additions. On the user-facing side, the update should mean 157 new emoji ranging from red-headed people to llamas and bagels. It also delivers a set of permissions that will be needed when Android P is launched in full, such as system level permissions for call logs and phone numbers.

Most likely, there are other behind-the-scenes alterations that have been made that are not detailed here, and especially when considering the company hasn’t outlined exactly what changes are arriving for Android Auto. Instead, those are simply said to be “stability improvements.” So users should expect their Essential PH-1 to connect a bit more smoothly and maintain a better connection, following the update.
