Face Masks Debut On Skype With Star Wars Masks And Emoji

Microsoft’s Skype app has hopped on the live digital face mask bandwagon with the likes of Snapchat and Facebook, and the company has decided to debut the feature with a Star Wars tie-in featuring characters from the upcoming The Last Jedi movie, as well as an emoji pack following the same theme. Characters like the beloved BB-8 droid and Captain Phasma are available, and you can even insert an iconic Imperial Tie Fighter or the even more iconic Millennium Fighter into your messages. The face mask feature is limited to characters that actually have faces, though they move with you just like any other 3D real-time masking technique.

Face masks are no new phenomenon, but they’re new to Skype, and this is a fairly grand way to debut them. You can use masks on pictures, videos, and live video calls. To access the masks, simply tap the new mask icon in the top of the screen while engaged in any mode of the app that involves capturing your face. From there, you’ll be able to swipe through a selection of masks to channel your rage into a photo or video by tapping into your inner Kylo Ren, or become a loyal, or perhaps not-so-loyal member of the Stormtrooper army. From there, all functions of the app work as normal. Taking off the mask and dropping back into our galaxy is as easy as hitting the X icon in the top of the screen.

On the emoji side of things, the list of available characters and objects is far more vast than the mask selection. It runs the gamut from the porgs, the new race set to be introduced in the new movie, to well-known characters like Chewbacca. While some of these are only available in a limited number of forms, for obvious reasons, other characters have full-on emoji packs of their own, allowing you to give an out of line friend Chewie’s disapproving stare, or share an adorable porg smile with a loved one. The force is strong with this update, and Skype doesn’t mention anything about when the content will disappear, so it’s likely that it will continue to be available until at least some short time following the upcoming film release this month.
