Fitbit Is Already Working On New ECG Technology For Its Wearables

ECG technology in wearables is a fairly new feature and Fitbit is among the brands that offers it in at least one product. But it seems that Fitbit didn’t stop there as it’s apparently working on a new ECG technology for its future wearables.

Having an ECG app on something like the Fitbit Sense, which is the single wearable from Fitbit that includes this, allows the user to keep track of their heart rhythm. That way it’s possible to tell if there are any irregularities. However you have to initiate the use of this technology anytime you want to check on it. Fitbit’s new ECG technology though would go beyond that.

New ECG technology from Fitbit would allow for continuous tracking

Much like Fitbit’s continuous heart rate tracking feature, which is available on a number of its devices now, the new ECG technology the company is working on would let users continuously measure their ECG.

Called PPG assessments, this new tech is currently undergoing clinical trials according to the company. And are intended to continually scan your heart rhythm.

According to Fitbit, the PPG assessments would work in tandem with the ECG app. The PPG assessments would be able to continually scan your heart rhythm to see if there were any irregular events that need attention. If it picks anything up, you could then use the ECG app to manually scan for anything and get further details.

A big plus of this technology is that it could potentially pick up on these details while you’re asleep. A time when you wouldn’t be able to use the ECG app to scan for heart rhythm irregularities.

Fitbit is close to completing the clinical trials, but there’s no time frame for release

Fitbit has confirmed that it’s currently putting the PPG assessments through clinical trials. And that those clinical trials are close to being completed.

However, there’s still no time frame for when the feature would be released. Or when there will be a Fitbit wearable product that actually includes the capability to use both the PPG and the ECG.

Fitbit also notes that it’s trying to build something for everyone. But that it also believes this kind of technology will be more useful to older users. Typically in the 50 and over range, compared to those that are between the ages of 20 and 25.

Fitbit is not the only company to utilize ECG technology in its wearables. Samsung uses it in the Galaxy Watch 3 for example. But it does appear to be the only company currently looking into improving the ECG feature with an added PPG capability.
