Google Maps’ Live View AR Navigation Feature Hits More Devices

Google has just announced that its “Live View” feature for Google Maps is now rolling to more devices, in beta form. This feature did appear to some users thus far, but a very limited number of them (only Google Maps Local Guides and Google Pixel users)… well, the company has opted to change that, as the feature seems to be stable enough.

So, what is Live View? That is a feature in Google Maps that uses Augmented Reality (AR) in order to show you which way to walk using arrows and directions placed in the real world. Do note that in order to get access to this feature, your phone needs to support ARCore, and for iPhones, ARKit. Here’s a list of phones that currently support ARCore.

Once the feature becomes available on your phone, you can try it out by searching for a nearby location you’d like to walk to, or simply selecting a place by tapping on a specific location in Google Maps.

Once you do that, tap the blue directions button near the bottom of the display. Tap for walking directions near the top of the screen, and then hit the “Live View” near the bottom of the display. Once you do that, you will be guided via this new feature. If you do not see the “Live View” option, the feature is still not available for your device.

Live View had been announced a while back, as the company took its sweet time to implement it in Maps. Well, it’s finally here, and it’s actually really useful. Getting to your destination by using Live View is really simple, and it’ll be hard for you to miss a street while walking, as you can basically see exactly where you are, and those arrows will guide you.

We haven’t really seen all that many changes when it comes to Google Maps lately. The company did do its best to make using public transit easier, by updating Google Maps back in June, but since then we did not really see any new features.

A ton of Google-made applications received the dark theme options in the last year or so, but not Google Maps. Truth be said, you can flip the dark switch for navigation itself, when you’re actively navigating somewhere, but all other parts of the app’s UI will remain white. If you’d like to find out how to do that, click here.

Google had rolled out dark mode to YouTube, Google Photos, Snapseed, Google Contacts, Google Calendar… and several other applications. You can even enable dark mode in Google Chrome, though you have to do that via developer options inside the browser.

The dark mode is coming to more apps, Gmail is one of the most requested apps for such features, and users are also requesting dark mode for the Google Play Store, Google Play Music, and Google Maps.

A piece of code surfaced recently, confirming that Google is working on a dark mode for Gmail, but we still do not know when will it become official. The company is probably planning to do the same with Google Maps, but we still do not have info on when that might happen.
