Google Pixel 4 & 4 XL Hit The FCC Ahead Of Launch

The Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL appear to be one step closer to launch, with four new model designations from the search giant now cropping up at the FCC. Arriving at the regulator under model numbers G020PQ, G020J, G020I, and G020MN, the listings don’t provide too many details about the handsets.

FCC filings typically show test results across various frequency bands and other connectivity types. In this case, that includes Bluetooth, NFC, and Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac with dual-band MIMO support on the latter of those. The two Google-branded flagships support GSM, WCDMA, CDMA, and a wide assortment of LTE bands as well.

There’s no mention of 5G in any of the tests but LTE support will be provided across the newer bands 71 and 48 for LTE. That’s in addition to support for bands 2, 4, 5, 7, 12, 13, 14, 17, 25, 26, 30, 38, 41, and 66. Summarily, that means these handsets should provide access to the highest 4G speeds across all U.S. carriers, as expected.

Pixel 4 expectations

As noted above, the FCC listings for the suspected Google Pixel 4 family of devices don’t give away too much. Regardless, following trends set with earlier Pixel smartphones, there have been plenty of leaks for the Google Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL already.

Google’s premium flagships are expected to deliver Android 10 via either a 5.5-inch or a 5.6-inch panel for the Pixel 4 and a 6.25-inch display for the “XL” variant. Google has abandoned its dessert names so that will just be Android 10. The smaller of the two is expected to be set at a fullHD+ resolution while the Pixel 4 XL will bring a QHD+ resolution. Both are expected to utilize OLED for deeper contrasts and better saturation.

No fewer than five camera sensors are expected to be part of the package here too. That would be a step up from the single-camera used in earlier Pixel models. That’s predicted to include two primary sensor modules as well as a 3D ToF unit similar to the one found in Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10+.

Around the front of the handsets, Google is expected to include an oversized “forehead” on its new devices. That’s as opposed to a notch and means the bezels won’t exactly be trimmed-down.

The design change is because two camera sensors are expected at the front alongside a slew of tech that it’s thought will be associated with Google’s Project Soli radar chip. In Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, the company will presumably use that to enable 3D facial recognition and hand-based touchless gesture controls.

Driving the new experience will be Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 SoC if rumors are to be believed. That will be backed up by at least 6GB RAM and 128GB storage by some reports.

When will Google Pixel 4 launch?

Google is expected to unveil it’s next-generation Pixel devices at its annual hardware event sometime in October. The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL landed around the same time last year, alongside the now-defunct Pixel Slate Chrome OS tablet.

Pricing for the upcoming flagships is expected to start at $749 or $799 in the U.S. for the smaller model. That could range as high as at least $1,000 — making this among the most expensive Google handsets to date.
