Google Scraps Pixel Neural Core From Pixel 5 & 4a 5G

According to a new report by Android Police, one interesting thing comes to the picture that Google has removed Pixel Neural Core from both the recently launched Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G devices.

After a long wait, Google finally unveiled the Google Pixel 5 and 4a 5G. Notably, this year the company targeted the premium-midrange segment instead of going flagship.

Both the phones come powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G, making both the devices 5G capable. Besides, Pixel 5 and 4a 5G pack some punch for a decent price range.

One interesting thing, however, noted by Android Police is that Google has removed the Pixel Neural Core from both the devices.

For the unaware, this Pixel Neural Core helped the last year’s Pixel 4 to perform specific tasks like machine learning and always-on listening.

But looking at the specs sheet of Pixel 5 and Pixel 4a 5G, Pixel Neural Core is nowhere mentioned. Though the retired Pixel 4’s specs sheet still mentions Pixel Neural Core under the Processors section.

Pixel 5 does not come with an IR face unlock, which could be the reason behind the removal

Besides, Google officially confirmed this removal by saying that both the new phones do not come with Neural Core or the Face Unlock.

One of the primary functions, as noted by Android Police, is that the Pixel Neural Core was used for IR Face unlock. But Pixel 5 does not include this feature.

This justifies Google’s decision of removing Pixel Neural Core from the specs of the Pixel 5 as well as the Pixel 4a 5G. Instead of the face unlock, Google has equipped both the new devices with the good-old fingerprint scanner on the back.

Moreover, there is one interesting thing that Google told Android Police. As per Google, the Pixel Neural Core was used in the Pixel 4 lineup to improve the imaging capabilities.

Now, it will be interesting to see whether this has any impact on the imaging capability of the Pixel 5 and 4a 5G.

Google was quick to cover its bases as it revealed that it was able to achieve better imaging performance out of the new devices via hardware optimization.

So, all in all, the removal of the Neural Core will not have much impact on the camera performance of the device. Note that this is as per the Google Pixel hardware team, and an actual test only will be able to reveal the truth.

We will keep you posted when we get our hands dirty and do a shootout of the camera performance of both the devices and see if there is any impact of removing Pixel Neural Core on Pixel 5 and 4a 5G or not.
