Google’s Data-Saving App Gains Emergency Bank & Bedtime Mode
Google has now confirmed it’s adding two new features to its Datally Android app that are further designed to ensure device owners are not unnecessarily consuming mobile data. The first of the new features is called “Emergency bank” and largely does exactly what it sounds like it would do. As Emergency bank is capable of storing an allocated amount of data for when you need it. Device owners are able to decide on exactly how much data they want to ‘bank’ and when the owner’s data limit (minus the banked amount) is reached the phone will disable any further use of data until the device owner instructs otherwise. According to the announcement, the allotted data amount will then be available for the owner to use as and when needed.
The second new feature is “Bedtime mode,” and once again, this is a fairly self-explanatory feature with Bedtime mode affording device owners the option to instruct their device to stop consuming data while they are asleep. Similar to Emergency bank, device owners are able to pre-set the parameters of the feature including setting the bedtime and wake up times. From then on the phone will automatically shut down all data requests during those times.
Datally first arrived on the scene as “Triangle” although as part of an official launch it was rebranded to Datally in late 2017. Since then the app has seen a number of improvements similar to those announced today, and all with a view to continually improving the data efficiently of smartphones. For example, back in June Google released another update which added four new data saving features – Daily Limit, Guest Mode, Unused Apps, and Wi-Fi Map. With these latest two features, this brings the total to six in the last couple of months alone, suggesting this has become more of a priority app for Google. As Google has stated Emergency bank and Bedtime mode are available today, current users of the app should expect an update to arrive soon enough, if it hasn’t already. While for those interested in checking out the app, it is a free to download app, and available through the Google Play Store on compatible devices.
