Google’s Digital Wellbeing ‘Heads Up’ Feature Is Now Rolling Out

According to 9to5Google, Google’s Digital Wellbeing ‘Heads Up’ is rolling out now. A few weeks ago Google was prepping to release a new feature to be known as ‘Heads Up.’ The new feature will be able to alert you to look up and pay attention to your surroundings. The point of this is to help keep people safe while walking around.

The new screen attention feature is being added to help people who are glued to their devices. Even as they walk around. There are a lot of hazards as we walk around in our day-to-day lives. As we walk around in our everyday lives there are poles, holes, and most importantly other people.

While your device is detecting movement you will get a reminder of these potential hazards. Of course, this is just to help keep you safe. The feature will not replace good old human decision-making. So remember to use your judgment, and use this feature to help you.

Once you enable this you will begin to get specific alerts from the Digital Wellbeing app. Once the feature is activated you can expect to see alerts like: “be careful”, “stay alert”, “look ahead”, “watch out”, “stay focused”, “watch your step”, and “lookup.”

You can take a look at the screenshots below to see what the setup looks like.

When a user launches the Digital Wellbeing app, the ‘Heads Up’ mode needs to activated manually. Unfortunately, this is not an automatic thing. But, that does make sense. Some users may not want to be notified all the time.

However, let it be known that if you want to activate this feature you will have to give the app access to your location and physical activity. Not only that but both will have to be set to “Allow all the time” for it to work properly.

As mentioned, the Digital Wellbeing ‘Heads Up’ mode is completely optional. However, it could be a good idea to use if you are a text walker. Currently, 9to5Google is saying that the option is only on Pixel 4a and Pixel 5 devices.

Those devices are running the Digital Wellbeing v1.0.364375698 version. This version is a beta build, so if you are not seeing the option to activate the new feature that is why. You could join the beta if you really want the new feature.

Now, if you are already enrolled in the beta and do not see the option to activate the feature you have an option to clear the cache. Doing so might allow you to see the new feature. To do so go to Settings > Apps > Digital Wellbeing > Clear cache and Force stop. After doing this re-open the Digital Wellbeing app and you should be able to enable the ‘Heads Up’ feature.
