Google’s New Tool For Stadia Will Help Devs Build AI For Games

Google has a new tool that it will end up using for Stadia called Semantic ML that will help developers build better and more realistic AI for games.

The tool was designed so that developers had a fast way to create an AI with a personality. With the goal of testing that prototype AI in early game builds. This would be an impressive aspect of Stadia game development both for the player and the developer alike.

Of course players wouldn’t be able to access the tool. Rather, they would benefit from developers having access to it as it would bring some interesting aspects to future games on the platform.

Semantic ML is a Stadia AI tool that acts as a “sort of Dungeon Master”

If you’re finding it hard to visualize what an AI in-game would be like, Google’s Anna Kipnis explains it pretty well.

She refers to it as a “sort of Dungeon Master of the game,” capable of adapting the content to the player. Things would be based on what players have already done in the game, not too unlike the way some games have a story that changes based on player decisions.

Kipnis also mentions that demos will be showcased in the near future. Which will give developers and players both an idea of what this might look like on a finished product.

Those demos will be on site at the Game Developer Conference this year at a session that Kipnis will be leading.

Stadia’s VP briefly touched on this last year

This wouldn’t be the first time AI technology has been mentioned in conjunction with Stadia.

Back in October of last year Jade Raymond briefly spoke about the possibilities. Mentioning NPC narratives that were powered by artificial intelligence technology and would change so that each player could have a unique experience.

Those AI-driven NPC narratives would also be powered by Duplex so that players could have much more life-like conversations with the in-game characters.

Semantic ML seems to be a tool that Google wants to implement for Stadia developers to take those exciting ideas and turn them into reality.

The tool could also be used to help developers customize quests at runtime, which could change based on player decisions just like the NPC interactions and conversation. Kipnis says that these quests could change based on emergent events as well.

So the overall goal is to take this tool and use it to build a better living game world. One that players could more or less feel like they were in.
