Heart Emoji Is Quite Popular On Twitter, But Not On Tinder: Report

Most of you probably don’t know this, but today is World Emoji Day… yes, that’s a thing. For that purpose, Baidu has decided to release a new “State of Emoji” report, which essentially reveals the most popular emoji used globally on the Facemoji Keyboard app.

Your stats are not calculated in if you’re not using this keyboard, but considering that the Facemoji Keyboard is focused on emoji, it’s a good indicator of what people are into these days, so the report makes sense… not to mention that this app is quite popular. In its report, Baidu highlighted some interesting usage habits across a number of applications.

The company says that Tinder is the only application not to feature a heart emoji in its Top 5, which is not that surprising, as Tinder is an app for initial dating contact, people don’t really talk to their loved ones via that app or anything of the sort.

On the flip side, Twitter is the only platform to feature more than one heart emoji in its Top 5, which means that aside from a regular heart emoji, people also used either an emoji of a different color or shape, but still a heart emoji. Many people probably wouldn’t get is, as Twitter is also not exactly a messaging platform, even though it supports messages. People really like to tweet out heart emojis, it seems.

What kind of an emoji report would it be if it didn’t share information regarding the most popular emoji, right? Well, this report does that, as it says that the most popular emoji worldwide is the Face with Tears of Joy, and it’s followed by Face Blowing a Kiss and Red Heart. Interestingly enough, the Smiling Face with Hearts is the most popular emoji added in Unicode update 11, which arrived not long ago.

People sent the most emoji on New Year’s Day this year, which is not all that surprising. Baidu says that usage peaked at over 3.2 million, which means 3.2 million emoji were sent on that day alone.

The Folded Hands emoji is the most popular hand emoji, if you were wondering, while The Skull emoji is ranked no. 10 in the United States. That information alone would be all that surprising, but if you note that The Skull emoji doesn’t rank in the top 50 in any other country, it’s quite interesting.

The Ring emoji is extremely popular in France, says Baidu, where it’s ranked no. 4 on the list, but in every other country it doesn’t even make the top 10 list. It’s another oddity, like the The Skull emoji in the US.

Egypt also stands out for one particular reason, the source says that half of Egypt’s top 10 emoji are hearts, so 5 most popular emoji in the country are heart of different colors / shapes, which is really surprising and quite interesting at the same time.

All of this information is based on fully anonymized data from 15 countries, says Baidu. The data references the top emoji used on Facemoji Keyboard on both Android and iOS between June 1, 2018, and May 31, 2019 by country and by app. Apps that were analyzed include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tinder, and WhatsApp.
