HMD Expanding Nokia Android Smartphone Brand In The U.S.

HMD Global is set on expanding the Nokia brand of Android smartphones in the United States, as suggested by a number of open stateside positions the company is looking to fill in the immediate future. The firm is presently soliciting applications for product and e-commerce leads in the country, with those roles being based in Seattle, Dallas, and Newark. At least half a dozen years of experience is required from applicants, with all of the newly discovered postings indicating the Finnish smartphone company is seeking to bring a wider variety of Android devices to the U.S. in the near future.

HMD has so far been reluctant to compete in the U.S., the world’s largest market for high-end handsets. None of its flagship models such as the Nokia 8 and Nokia 8 Sirocco have been officially launched stateside, with its efforts in the country still being largely focused on value-oriented devices such as the Nokia 6.1. The company’s decision to fully embrace Android One may eventually see Google help promote its mobile offerings in the U.S. as well, with Alphabet’s subsidiary already demonstrating a willingness to support original equipment manufacturers who opt to deliver products with a stock version of Android.

The new positions that HMD is currently seeking to fill are scattered throughout the country, presumably because the firm still doesn’t have a U.S. HQ. Recent reports from several industry watchers suggested Nokia smartphones managed to capture approximately one percentage point of the global market within their first year of worldwide commercial availability, hence surpassing analyst expectations. HMD is understood to be doing particularly well in India and parts of Europe where the Nokia brand is still held in high regard and hasn’t experienced a significant hit during its unsuccessful spell under Microsoft’s corporate umbrella. The company is expected to announce its next Android-powered handsets at this year’s IFA, a Berlin, Germany-based trade show running from August 31 through September 5.
