Honor 9X Series Goes Official With Kirin 980 Chipset, Pop-up Selfie Camera

Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has today announced the Honor 9X and Honor 9X Pro smartphones. The handsets were revealed during an event in Xi’an China, alongside the new HONOR MagicBook notebook and HONOR Band 5.

The newly announced phones are fueled by the octa-core 7nm Kirin 810 chipset which boasts of a proprietary NPU that can boost AI-related tasks and the company claims that it has thrashed all AI benchmark scores. The Honor 9X and Honor 9X Pro also feature the company’s GPU Turbo technology that improves graphics processing and energy efficiency for better gaming performance.

Having the Kirin 810 SoC under the hood give the Honor 9X and Honor 9X Pro a unique advantage over other mid-range phones, as this is the only mid-tier silicon that is made on 7nm manufacturing node, the same process which is used to manufacture flagship chipsets such as the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 SoC.

The Honor 9X is available in three configurations, include a variant with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of onboard memory, and two variants with 6GB of RAM and 64GB and 128GB of internal storage. The Honor 9X Pro comes in two variants, one with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of memory, and a specced out model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal memory. The phones will ship with Android 9 Pie beneath the company’s EMUI 9.1.

The phones are the latest to join the company’s X series phones that feature an X-shaped 3D gradient rear glass panel and add a bit of oomph to the design. So, for a mid-ranger, the Honor 9X series of phones look pretty good. The Honor 9X is available in the colors red, black, and blue, while the 9X Pro comes in purple and black. For those who find the X on the back a bit too much, the black variant is a good choice as it doesn’t carry that design element.

The phones sport a massive 6.59-inch display with an impressive 92 percent screen to body ratio, thanks to the pop-up 16 megapixels front snapper. Since this is a relatively inexpensive device, it features a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and not an embedded one. The 3.5mm headphone jack has also been retained.

The phones feature a large 1/2-inch 48 megapixels primary sensor with an aperture of f/1.8 that captures more light to improve night-time photography. The main sensor is joined by a 2 megapixels unit for collecting depth information and the Honor 9X Pro also get a third 8 megapixels wide-angle camera.

With a beefy 4000mAh capacity battery, the Honor 9X series offers around 10 hours of video playback or 10 hours of gameplay. However, fast charging is not supported, which is a bummer. But then again, these are mid-range phones, so Honor had to cut corners somewhere.

Sales will begin in China on 23 July and the prices start from around $200 and $320 for the Honor 9X and 9X pro respectively. Honor says the phone will be introduced globally soon and while no time frame has been given, we can expect them to make it to more countries in the coming months.
