How To Switch To 120Hz On The Galaxy S20

One of the big features of the new Samsung Galaxy S20 series, is the 120Hz display. However, Samsung has opted to make it 60Hz out of the box. So as soon as you turn on your shiny new Galaxy S20, you’re not getting all 120Hz, instead, you’re getting just 60Hz. Even though the screen also defaults to FHD+ resolution instead of WQHD+ resolution.

However, there is a pretty easy way to fix this, thankfully. But, many may not actually know that this is possible. Here’s how you can switch your new Galaxy S20 over to 120Hz. And you’ll never want to go back.

How to switch to 120Hz

To switch over to 120Hz, jump into the Settings.

Now, scroll down to “Motion Smoothness”. It should be the third option below the dark mode section. Tap on it.

From here, you can choose either 60Hz or 120Hz. Samsung also gives you a slight demo of the difference between the two before you enable it. And below the option, it also tells you that you will get better battery life with 60Hz enabled over 120Hz.

Tap on 120Hz, and then tap on “Apply”.

You’re all set. It’s just that easy to enable 120Hz on the Galaxy S20. This is going to work for all three models too, Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra.

Remember that 120Hz only works with FHD+ resolution. So you can’t use the full resolution of the incredible display on the Galaxy S20 at this faster refresh rate. However, Samsung is working on testing this option and it may be available in the coming months.

Additionally, the Galaxy S20 will automatically drop to 60Hz in certain apps that are already battery intensive, like Google Maps. It will also drop down to 60Hz when the battery is low, to conserve power automatically. This is to ensure that you can get through a full day before you get to a charger.

Switching over to 120Hz really makes the entire OS feel a lot more smooth. And that’s because the screen is refreshing twice as much per second as it was before. So it’s only natural that it’ll look a lot smoother. It is also really big for gaming. Since the difference between 60Hz and 120Hz could cost you a life in some shooting games, jumping to 120Hz is definitely needed when it comes to gaming.

Either way, it’s a really great experience, and you’ll never want to go back to just 60Hz.
