In-Display Fingerprint Sensor Rumored For Galaxy P30, P30 Plus

Samsung is expected to soon join the in-display fingerprint scanner bandwagon with the rumored Galaxy P30 and Galaxy P30 Plus mid-range smartphones. The device names have been tipped by a Weibo user Master Maserati while also revealing that the alleged SM-G6200 model number belongs to either of the two Galaxy P-series smartphones. It is believed that Samsung will make use of optical biometric solutions for these two smartphones while the ultrasonic fingerprint scanner sourced from Qualcomm will be reserved for the high-end Galaxy S10 which is expected to go official by early 2019. The said optical sensors are found abundantly in many modern smartphones from Chinese companies such as Vivo and OPPO, and it will be a preferred implementation for Samsung’s upcoming mid-range devices.

Having said that, the Galaxy P30 and Galaxy P30 Plus will reportedly be the first Samsung-branded smartphones to sport an in-display fingerprint sensor while the Galaxy S10 series will soon follow with a similar solution. According to a tipster MMDJ, Samsung may make a return to IPS LCD panels for its Galaxy P series, which contradicts the recent reports of the series sporting an optical in-display fingerprint scanner that is required to be placed below an OLED display with the currently available mass-market technology. The same tipster previously tweeted that an upcoming Samsung handset with an under-display fingerprint sensor will be sold exclusively in the Chinese market. This leads to a possibility that the South Korean company may include different display panels for China and the rest of the world based on the kind of biometric solution used. It is a mere speculation at this point in time considering the limited information available and the brand may choose to go for a different execution altogether.

The smartphone maker was previously tipped to reshuffle its entry-level and mid-range lineups by replacing the Galaxy J lineup with the new Galaxy P series. This change is believed to be a result of an increasing competition from certain Chinese players that have rivaled Samsung in many of its key markets when lower-end smartphones still dominate the industry. Samsung is looking for ways to grow, or at least maintain, its market position, for which, it is constantly bringing advanced features to its mid-range smartphones, such as the recently launched Galaxy A7 (2018) with a triple-camera setup, a first for any Samsung smartphone, and the rumored in-display fingerprint reader that is coming to a mid-end handset before a flagship.
