Instacart Set To Fire All Employees Who Voted To Unionize



Following a move from some its employees to try to unionize, Instacart aims to fire all of those employees that voted for the initiative. As reported by The Verge, the ten employees who voted to form a union will be fired by the company.

Instacart is a food delivery service which differentiates itself from other companies in that it specialises in groceries. Ranking highly in Android Headlines review of these services in 2020 the platform had been going from strength to strength.

However, in recent months some companies have tried to muscle in on the grocery delivery service. With more people wanting groceries delivered during the pandemic the like of DoorDash have expanded into this territory.

Workers rights those delivery drives in these types of work have long been under scrutiny with many complaining about conditions. The amount of competition in the industry has incited workers to band together to push for better conditions.

However, Instacart has hit back at its workers after a few tried to form a union. The news comes as the company shuts down some of its in-store operations during the pandemic.

Instacart fires employees who voted to unionize

The layoff have concerned ten employees at a grocery store called Mariano’s but has also affected some other workers. The workers from Skokie, Illinois voted to unionize with the United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1546 (UFCW).

At the time they saw this as a landmark victory as it was the first time workers from a tech company relying on contract labour successfully banded together.

These employees found themselves in the middle of negotiations for their first contract when the firings hit. One unionized worker has spoken out about the situation. They described it as “totally discouraging for any gig workers”.

UFCW has said that the layoffs will hit almost 2,000 of the company’s 10,000 grocery store workers. Some also worry that this news could serve to put people off unionizing in the future.

Instacart has form of intimidating its employees to vote against the union as happened in this situation last year. The company did say it would offer “transition assistance” to people looking for work following the layoffs.

However, due to the contracts, these workers are on they could receive as little as $250 in severance. This is certainly not a good look for Instacart and the industry as a whole even though they have tried to hide these layoffs under the guise of the pandemic.
