Instagram Announces Testing Of “Recommended” Posts In Feed

Instagram announced on Tuesday that it is beginning to test a new feature for the platform. It is testing recommended posts into a user’s home feed. Basically, Instagram would be taking the “Discover” feed that is the second tab in the app, and infusing it into the home feed. The reason for Instagram doing this is so that its users see more posts, spend more time on the app and engage more. Which results in more ad revenue for the company.

According to Instagram’s blog post, the recommended posts won’t be that aggressive in the home feed. Meaning you won’t see a ton of them in your feed. But these posts will be based off of people you follow as well as photos and videos you have liked. So if you like quite a few smartphone pictures, you may start seeing more from other accounts, in your home feed and so forth. The recommended posts are shown as “Recommended for you” and there is also a follow button in the right corner, along with a menu. Which will likely have an option to stop showing posts like this – or something of the sort. That is feedback that will help Instagram improve this feature.

Instagram says that this test is going to be rolling out in the next few weeks, and it is hoping to get feedback from users on this feature before rolling it out to everyone in the coming months. This feature could prove to be pretty useful, as you might be able to find some users that you want to follow that you didn’t know about before. And that’s the whole point here from Instagram. It wants to get people to use the app more and more, spending more time in the app. As it allows them to charge more for ads, and bring in more revenue from ads. Which is the only way that Instagram makes money anyways.
