Instagram Says It Doesn’t Share Your Precise Location

One major concern people have with social media is the large amount of personal data that they give to different platforms on a daily basis. For instance, most social media platforms know exactly where you are at this very moment due to location tracking. However, Instagram just announced that it does not share your precise location data with any other companies.

According to a recent tweet (via BBC News), there have been some viral posts going around saying that Instagram shares your precise location data with other IG users. This, understandably, caused people to become concerned with the app. However, the company is fighting back against these claims.

Instagram says that your precise location data is never shared

If you’re in a location and you want to make a post about it, you have the option to tag that location. If you’re posing by the Eiffel Tower, you can tag the Eiffel Tower in that post. That way, your followers will be able to see other posts involving the Eiffel Tower should you want to.

The issue is that Instagram needs to have access to your precise location in order to do that. People fear what happens to that data when Instagram gets ahold of it (let’s be honest, part of the reason for the fear is because Instagram is owned by Meta).

Because of the widespread worry, Instagram Comms posted a brief thread addressing the concern. Instagram Comms is the official Twitter account for the company’s PR team.

To be clear, we don’t share your location with others. Similar to other social media companies, we use precise location for things like location tags and maps features.

The account also mentioned that you can go to Instagram’s app’s settings and make changes to its access to your location. You have the option to disable access to your location altogether if you’d feel safer. This might be the better option if you don’t believe Instagram’s claims.
