Lenovo Teases Quad-Camera “S5 Pro” October Reveal

In short: Lenovo has plans to launch a new device, the S5 Pro in October, based on an image that recently cropped up on China’s Weibo social network. The image was shared to the network with a link, titled Lenovo S5 Pro, which leads back to Lenovo’s website and only shows four smartphone camera sensors arranged in a square configuration. A white dot positioned at the center of the rendered lenses appears to show that’s where an LED flash will be placed. Additionally, the accompanying text indicates that this is a device that should be revealed at some point in October and will be driven by AI.

Background: While Lenovo currently sells plenty of devices under the Moto-branding, a significant number of its self-branded smartphones are generally sold within its home country. With regards to this particular device, the company first unveiled plans for a Lenovo S5 back in March but news of a “Pro” variation has been almost entirely non-existent. That prior phablet ships in a 5.7-inch format with the display set at 1080 x 2160 resolution at an 18:9 screen ratio. A Snapdragon 625 drives the original Lenovo S5, clocked at 2.0 GHz and backed by either 3GB or 4GB of RAM depending on the configuration chosen. The upper-end allots users either 64GB or 128GB of storage while the 3GB RAM variant offers 32GB of internal space. It also has a 16-megapixel camera at the front and a dual 13-megapixel snapper on the back, set just above a fingerprint scanner and comes with AI backing up Lenovo’s ZUI 3.7 overlay, on top of Android 8.0 (Oreo).

Impact: The image makes it fairly clear that Lenovo has an improved iteration of that device in the works with plans to announce at some point this month. However, it doesn’t provide much by way of details regarding what else might be changed for the Pro version, or where it will be sold or pricing. On the outside, it will likely resemble the device its model designation is derived from and the underlying OS will likely be based on the ZUI 3.7 installation, at the very least. That will almost certainly include improvements to take advantage of the additional sensors located at the back. The original design featured a single phase detection autofocus-enabled sensors coupled with a black and white sensor but it isn’t clear how the third and fourth units on this device will serve to produce better images.
