Moto G8 Announced With Revamped Cameras, Design

Lenovo-owned Motorola has now announced the follow-up to last year’s Moto-branded mid-ranger with the arrival of the Moto G8. This time around, the design of the device has been changed significantly in terms of camera placement. That highlights what appears to be the biggest step forward from the Moto G7, while the rest of the design is fairly familiar.

The back panel on the Moto G8 no longer houses a circular camera array. Instead, Moto has moved the cameras to a vertical array configuration, with the primary 16-megapixel “fast-focusing” snapper set apart from other sensors. The LED flash is offset to the right of that, set above and to the left of the Moto logo.

The build is “water-repellant” but does not feature an IP rating or deeper water and dust resistance. A single loudspeaker remains at the center of the audio experience.

Moto’s secondary cameras are less well-defined as of this announcement. The entire array is AI-managed and capable even in low light, according to the company. But the secondary cameras are an ultra-wide-angle lens and a Macro Vision camera.

In the former case, the company says that the lens will fit in four-times the content in-frame as the 78-degree primary camera. The Macro Vision lens gets shots that are five-times closer than the standard snapper.

That design change carries over to the front of the gadget. Moto has abandoned the water-drop notch in favor of a hole-punch design for the display panel. The company hasn’t provided any details about that camera’s specifications.

Moto G8 delivers more than a familiar design with revamped cameras

Aside from the camera system and overall device design changes, Moto has followed suit on its previous iterations in the Moto G series. That starts with a respectable 4,000mAh battery. The company hasn’t defined charge times for that but it does indicate that it’s designed to allow for up to 40-hours of usage.

The battery supplies power to an octa-core Qualcomm-built Snapdragon 665 SoC, centered around AI processing. That allows for better performance, camera capabilities, and security. Behind that, Moto supplies 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. The latter figure is expandable via SD Card up to 512GB, leaving plenty of space for apps and media.

The hardware enables two software features from the familiar Moto Experiences to a new Moto Gametime. The latter software is newer and, as its name suggests, is geared at mobile gaming. Specifically, it blocks interruptions and bolsters performance in gaming.

All of that resides in an Android 10 firmware environment. As with prior Moto gadgets, that’s an almost stock bloat-free variant of the OS, resented to the user via a 6.4-inch HD+ Max Vision display.

The Moto G8 hasn’t been announced for the US for the new phones either. That’s a step away from previous launches of its G series from the Lenovo-owned company. For now, the device is also only launching in Brazil as of today. Other regions will be seeing a roll out in sales over ‘the coming weeks’. Specifically, that will be in Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Australia.
