Nest’s New Product Names Are Confusing

This week at Google I/O, the search giant made the Nest rebranding official, after a few leaks and rumors leading up to the show.

The only product that Google mentioned that was renamed, was the Google Home Hub, being renamed to the Google Nest Hub. But now, after some have dug around Google’s Support pages, we can see the names of other Nest products, after the rename. Essentially, the names are remaining the same, just adding “Google” to it.

For example, there’s the Google Nest Learning Thermostat, the Google Nest Hello, Google Nest Cam IQ, Outdoor and Google Nest Secure Alarm System. If that wasn’t confusing enough, there is also the Nest x Yale Lock with Google Nest Connect. that might be the longest name for a smart home product to date.

Interestingly enough, the only Google Home product that was renamed was the Nest Hub. The Google Home smart speakers are still using the Google Home name. That might change in the future, but knowing Google, that is unlikely to happen.

The naming likely won’t affect most people. As you likely aren’t going to say to your friends, “Oh I bought the new Google Nest Learning Thermostat”, no you’ll just say the “new Nest thermostat” and that’ll be it. But what will affect most people, is the Nest and Google Home apps. Remember, the Nest Hub is still going to be setup through the Google Home app on your smartphone, and not the Nest app. Presumably it’ll be the same for the Nest Hub Max when that launches in July, but as for now we are unsure on that.

It seems that Google only half baked this rebranding with Nest, which shouldn’t be much of a surprise when it comes to Google. The company does things like this quite regularly. If Google was really looking to get rid of “Google Home” and just use Nest for it, then the two apps should be merged at some point. And the Google Home speakers need to be renamed as well. Though, Google may wait until the fall to do that, and release some successors to the Google Home, Home Mini and Home Max.

On some levels, the rebranding made plenty of sense, then on others, it looks like this was a last minute thing for Google. Especially since the Nest Hub Max won’t be available until July – so it wasn’t given out to attendees at Google I/O like you might have expected. It’ll be interesting to see if Google just drops the “Google” name from these Nest products in the future, as it will make these products less of a mouthful. But on the other hand, it won’t have Google’s branding on it, which is likely why these new names exist.

It’s much of the same for Google here. Its branding has always been rather clunky and confusing, and that is continuing with these Nest products. Someday, Google will get the idea and be able to create some names for its products that actually sound good and people will know what they mean.
