New PS5 DualSense Controller Features Are Coming To Android

Ever since the PS5 was launched the DualSense controller worked with Android, but it didn’t have all of its features. But it looks like that’s changing soon. As reported by XDA Developers, Sony is preparing a new Linux kernel driver that will enhance the support for the DualSense controller on Android, which will open up the capabilities for these features.

This isn’t going to add support for the adaptive trigger or the advanced haptics. For the latter however, the only thing missing will be support for the waveform and frequency of the vibrations. What will work will be the intensity of the vibrations. Which means some games will eventually rumble the controller at key points.

Of course developers will still need to add this support in their games. As having the controller haptics supported on Android won’t magically make it work if the game doesn’t have them coded in.

These new PS5 DualSense controller features may only work with Android 12 at first

According to XDA, the main Android kernels which are getting support for these features are based on Android 12. So devices running on Android 12 will initially be the ones to support them.

No devices are specifically confirmed. But likely candidates include Google’s upcoming Pixel 6 and Android 12 devices that are running on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 mobile platform. That would include devices like the ROG Phone 5 series, the Legion Phone Duel 2, the RedMagic 6R and RedMagic 6 Pro and others. All of which are gaming smartphones.

Phone manufacturers with devices running on Android 11 based on the Android 4.9-q, 4.14-stable, and 4.19-stable common kernels may also gain support.

Other features to expect when the support goes live

In addition to the rumble, the new features from the DualSense coming to Android include the touch pad, the light bar, and the ability for devices to indicate the battery level of the controller.

The LEDs will also function and players will be able to engage the motion sensors. Which could open up plenty of possibilities for games. Including using the controller like a steering wheel in racing titles. Though that is just one example and the motion sensors could work for many other things too. As it would all depend on how game developers take advantage of that feature.
