Nokia 9 Penta Camera Flagship Renders Leak In Images & Video

The Nokia 9 renders have just surfaced in a new video and images. These CAD-based renders come from @OnLeaks and 91mobiles, which is not the first time the two partnered up to provide such information. In any case, the Nokia 9 is HMD Global’s upcoming flagship smartphone, and these renders actually resemble several leaks that we’ve seen in the last couple of months. The Nokia 9 is rumored to sport five cameras on the back, not to mention that HMD Global actually acquired rights to use the PureView branding on its devices from Microsoft. Thanks to the provided video and images, you can take a look at the Nokia 9 from basically all angles, and presuming this leak is accurate, the Nokia 9 will be quite an interesting smartphone.

Now, the first thing you will notice is that the phone is made out of metal and glass, which is not all that surprising considering that most phones are made out of those exact materials nowadays. In any case, on the right-hand side of the device, the power / lock, volume up, and volume down buttons are included, while a SIM card tray lies on the top of the phone. The device’s display sports rounded corners, and it has some bezel above and below the display. Those bezels are not thick, but they’re also not as thin as they are on some other devices, like the Xiaomi Mi MIX, OPPO Find X, OnePlus 6T, and so on. If we flip the phone around, you will be able to see seven rings included back there, but not all of them are camera sensors. Five out of seven of those rings host camera sensors, the sixth is actually a dual-LED, dual-tone flash unit, while the seventh one seems to be some sort of a dual-sensor which will be used for proximity detection, at least according to the source.

Now, the source notes that the info regarding sensors and lenses used in this phone is still not available, but the device will probably include separate wide-angle, telephoto, and depth-sensing cameras, amongst other. It is possible that HMD Global will also include a monochrome lens, but we’ll see what will happen. Zeiss branding is mentioned on the back of the device, while the PureView branding is nowhere to be found, though it is possible that it will be included before the phone becomes official. The source also notes that the phone will sport a 5.9-inch QHD+ display, and that it will offer an 18:9 display aspect ratio. The Nokia 9 will measure 155 x 75 x 7.9mm, while a single camera will be placed above the display, along with two sensors. An in-display fingerprint scanner will probably be a part of the package as well, as a regular capacitive fingerprint scanner is not visible anywhere on this phone’s body. It is also quite possible that the phone will support facial scanning. The phone’s back side is curved, and you will notice how neatly its rear-facing rings are aligned, one in the middle, and the other six surround it.

Background: The Nokia 9 has been rumored for a long, long time at this point, as it was expected to arrive already. Latest reports claimed that the phone’s release had been postponed by the company’s execs, as they wanted it to be perfected before pushing it out to the market, and considering that the Pureview deal was in progress, that may have something to do with it as well. That delay had managed to anger some of the company’s employees, at least according to a rumor that surfaced in September, as they believe Nokia is missing its chance of properly competing with some other companies. This decision was probably not made solely by Juho Sarvikas, HMD’s Chief Product Officer, but a source that shared the news did list him as the main reason behind the delay. That is not all, as there were a ton of Nokia 9 rumors and leaks. The latest rumor that surfaced, in early October, actually suggested that the phone will be called the Nokia 9 PureView, and if that ends up being the case, it will be an obvious attempt by HMD Global to take advantage of its newly-acquired branding rights.

Depending on when it launches, the Nokia 9 will be fueled by either the Snapdragon 845 or Snapdragon 8150 / 855. The device will ship with Android 9 Pie out of the box, and it will be a part of Google’s Android One project, which means it will ship with stock software. The device will likely include either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, though both variants are a possibility. The Nokia 9 is also expected to offer a rather large battery which will support fast charging, while wireless charging will be a part of the offering as well, most probably.

Impact: It will be interesting to see if the PureView technology will be implemented in the Nokia 9, as we do know that PureView branding rights have been acquired by HMD Global, but we do not really have any info regarding the technology behind it. The Nokia 808 PureView which arrived years ago was the best camera phone of its time, and if the technology actually managed to improve over the years, and it gets implemented in the Nokia 9, that handset could be a real force to be reckoned with when it comes to smartphone camera phones. It is still unclear when the Nokia 9 will arrive, but if rumors are to be believed, the phone will become official at the Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona. If that ends up being the, however, HMD Global will hopefully use the right processor for the device, and not include the Snapdragon 845, which will, at that time, be replaced by Qualcomm’s next-gen flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 8150 or 855, depending on which name the company opts for. HMD Global did introduce the Nokia 8 Sirocco during MWC 2018, but that phone arrived with the Snapdragon 835, instead of Snapdragon 845, and the sales were not up to par, and the wrong SoC choice probably had something to do with that, but we cannot be sure, of course.
