OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition May Support 50W Charging

According to a new post by OnePlus India’s official Twitter handle, the upcoming OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition smartphone may actually offer different charging technology compared to the regular OnePlus 6T. This is not something we’re used to seeing, as special edition OnePlus phones are usually identical to regular ones, but they sport a slightly different paint job, and in some cases somewhat different back cover materials. Well, in the case of the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, that may change. On its official Twitter handle, OnePlus India wrote the following: “Charging is about to hit warp speed.”, while it also used the “SalutetoSpeed” and “McLarenF1” hashtags. Along with that tweet, the company showed off a device beginning to charge, though that short video does not reveal much.

As most of you know, the OnePlus 6T ships with the company’s proprietary fast charging, the one that was included in the OnePlus 6 as well. It takes 85 minutes for the OnePlus 6 to charge up from 0 to 100-percent, a bit longer for the OnePlus 6T because of its larger battery, and the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition could take considerably less time in order to charge up to 100-percent. It’s hard to believe OnePlus would tease “warp speed” charging for the McLaren edition of the phone if it plans to use the same charging as on the OnePlus 6T, which suggests that this smartphone may be the first one to ship with charging inspired by OPPO’s Super VOOC charging (10V/5A, up to 50W), which is the fastest charging around. OPPO and OnePlus are sister companies, they’re both owned by BBK Electronics, and they often inspire one another. Well, if the OnePlus 6T actually ends up shipping with Super VOOC, which will be called differently in OnePlus’ case, then the phone’s battery may actually recharge in about 35 minutes. The OPPO Find X Lamborghini Edition ships with Super VOOC, and it has a 3,400mAh battery, and it takes that phone 35 minutes to charge from 0 to 100-percent, so it will probably take a couple of minutes more for the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, due to the fact its battery is a bit larger, a 3,700mAh unit.

Background: The OPPO Find X Lamborghini Edition is not the only smartphone to support Super VOOC, the OPPO R17 Pro actually ships with that technology as well. This charging requires a phone to be charged up with a special charger which comes with the device, which is not surprising at all, as pretty much every fast charging tech requires a special charger, same goes for the OnePlus 6 and OnePlus 6T. The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition will be announced on December 11, which is only a couple of days away, and on that day we’ll get all the necessary details when it comes to this phone. In addition to a new charging tech, the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition may also ship with 10GB of RAM, at least according to rumors, which would be another first for OnePlus, as no other OnePlus device ships with 10GB of RAM, the OnePlus 6 and 6T cap out at 8GB.

Impact: Truth be said, OnePlus’ teaser may actually be there simply to promote the phone’s arrival, and the company may not be looking to change anything as far as charging is concerned, but that would be a shame. This teaser screams improvements, and including Super VOOC-inspired charging in the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition would certainly change the game for the company. OnePlus already has one of the fastest charging technologies in the market, but Super VOOC would take things on a whole another level, as it is the fastest smartphone charging tech currently available.
