OnePlus Offers Free 6T For Taps, Hints At Separate Reveal

In short: Smartphone users have a chance to pick up a brand new OnePlus 6T for free with by just tapping on their device’s screen after signing up for at a recently posted “Unlock Your Speed” promotional site for the upcoming Android flagship. The contest is fairly straightforward. Users sign up at the contest website from a mobile device and then are tasked with tapping the screen as quickly as possible, with each touch increasing the chances that they’ll win the device once it is unveiled. Furiously clicking through enough times will unlock a personal prize, giving participants access to free items on the OnePlus official store in addition to their contest entry. If enough people participate and rack up enough taps from around the world, the company also hints that it will announce something entirely different for its fans.

Background: OnePlus is no stranger to promotions, having begun offering discounts, coupons, buy-one-get-one offers, and celebratory giveaways for nearly as long as the company has been making phones. More recently, those have included free protective cases and earphones for the OnePlus 5 and those interested in the company’s OnePlus 6 had an opportunity to try out and review that handset in advance back in April via yet another promotion. So the new promotion is really just the latest in a long string of device promotions as part of its ongoing marketing strategies. However, the indication that participation could lead to a secondary announcement is intriguing. OnePlus speculation over the past several weeks has ranged from a rumored special edition version of the OnePlus 6T that could be in the works to a new line of OnePlus televisions.

The latter of those could be a bit of a stretch for the company but a special edition device would fit with the theme of the contest without being too unusual. The OnePlus 6, for example, was accompanied by the launch of a special edition Avengers version that included a unique overall color scheme, Avengers branding, and an Iron Man-inspired protective case among other things.  OnePlus 6T “Ultimate” edition has been teased recently as well but there haven’t really been any details revealed about what that might include.

The new OnePlus 6T, meanwhile, has been leaked and teased with some frequency over the past several months, leading up to its October 29 launch. That’s not at all an uncommon occurrence either with OnePlus devices. This time around, the “T” variation of its flagship is expected to be built around a bezel-free design with a ‘tear-drop’ shaped notch and in-screen fingerprint scanner. A Snapdragon 845 SoC has been leaked as well. That’s backed by up to 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage packed in behind a 6.4-inch OLED panel set to a resolution of 2340 x 1080. The primary cameras, on the other hand, are expected to consist of a 12-megapixel sensor with a f/1.5 to f/2.4 variable aperture and a secondary 20-megapixel sensor. Facial recognition and other modern flagship features are predicted to be part of the package and all of that is expected to be powered by a 3700mAh battery.

Impact: Speculation is likely to run rampant with regard to what could be announced by OnePlus at its device unveiling if it manages to get enough clicks from fans around the world. In the meantime, the company will choose winners across five rounds based on total taps of a given participant and winners will be selected every 24-hours. That will start at a randomly selected moment at the company’s discretion and revealed via social media, according to the official rules.
