Is the Sony Xperia 5 II still worth getting, with that in mind? Well, that’s what we’re here to find out.

Both are also quite compelling, and quite powerful. As per usual, we’ll compare the two phones across quite a few categories. First, we’ll list their specifications, and then move to the design, display, performance, battery, camera, and audio categories. Having said that, let’s kick off the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE vs Sony Xperia 5 II comparison, shall we.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE vs Sony Xperia 5 II: Design

Both of these phones feature a frame made out of metal. It may seem like they both offer a glass back, but that’s not the case. The Galaxy S20 FE actually includes a plastic back, while the Xperia 5 II does feature a glass back. The back of this phone is protected by the Gorilla Glass 6. Needless to say, that back will be considerably more resistant to scratches than the one on the Galaxy S20 FE. Samsung claims this is quality plastic, and calls it ‘glasstic’, but it cannot hold up as well as Gorilla Glass 6 in that regard.

Now, both devices have slim bezels, but there are some considerable differences. The Galaxy S20 FE’s bezels are slimmer, especially the ones above and below the display. That phone does include a display camera hole, though, unlike the Xperia 5 II. The Xperia 5 II keeps hold of the top and bottom bezels, they’re not that thick, but they’re still thicker than on most flagship smartphones these days. The positive thing is, you don’t get a display hole or a notch here.

The in-hand feel is also different. The Xperia 5 II is considerably narrower than the Galaxy S20 FE, and that’s something you’ll notice straight away. It’s easier to use in one hand because of it, despite the fact it’s quite tall. The Xperia 5 II is also lighter than the Galaxy S20 FE, by almost 30 grams. That is all to be expected as the Xperia 5 II comes with a smaller display than the Galaxy S20 FE.

Rear camera modules are placed in the same spot on the two devices, though they look different. The Galaxy S20 FE offers more of a curve on the back, compared to Sony’s offering. Do note that both of these phones are quite slippery, and that using a case may be a good idea.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE vs Sony Xperia 5 II: Display

Both of these phones have quite impressive displays, to say the least. Both of them are fullHD+ panels, but quite impressive panels at that. The Samsung Galaxy S20 FE comes with a 6.5-inch fullHD+ (2400 x 1080) Super AMOLED display. The Sony Xperia 5 II offers a 6.1-inch fullHD+ (2520 x 1080) OLED panel. Both of those displays are flat, and both support 120Hz refresh rate. They’re super responsive, and super-fluid.

Corning’s Gorilla Glass protection is included on both. The Xperia 5 II panel is protected by the Gorilla Glass 6, while we still don’t know what version is included on the Galaxy S20 FE. HDR content is supported by both displays, by the way. The Xperia 5 II panel is a bit taller, as the phone comes with a 21:9 display aspect ratio, while the Galaxy S20 FE offers a 20:9 aspect ratio.

Both displays are a joy to look at and use, to be quite honest. You won’t even miss QHD+ resolution if you switch, as the difference is basically impossible to see. They’re extremely sharp, while the colors are rich and vivid. The blacks are deep, as you’d expect out of OLED displays. When it comes to viewing angles, neither phone disappoints, as you can clearly see what’s going on even at an angle.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE vs Sony Xperia 5 II: Performance

With such high-end specs, you’d expect excellent performance, right? Well, you’d be right, as both of these phones deliver in that regard. Their super-fluid displays only help the matter, as everything is quick and snappy, to say the least. No matter if you’re just scrolling, opening / closing apps, and multitasking, or you’re gaming and doing some video processing. These two handsets can handle it without breaking a sweat.

Both are fueled by the Snapdragon 865 SoC, which is Qualcomm’s most powerful processor at the moment, along with the Snapdragon 865 Plus, of course. Both phones offer plenty of RAM as well. The Galaxy S20 FE comes in 6GB and 8GB RAM variants (depending on region), while the Xperia 5 II is equipped with 8GB of RAM. That, along with Android 10, and well-optimized software, results in a really, really good performance on both sides.

Each of these smartphones should be able to run pretty much any game you throw at it. That goes for the most demanding titles available for Android. Both are extremely snappy at the moment, though their UIs differ quite a bit. The Galaxy S20 FE offers Samsung’s One UI, while the Xperia 5 II is much closer to stock Android when it comes to its software.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE vs Sony Xperia 5 II: Battery

Both phones are actually really good when it comes to battery life as well. They’re not exactly the best in the market in that regard, but they’re really good nonetheless. The Galaxy S20 FE comes with a larger, 4,500mAh unit. That is to be expected, as it has a considerably larger display. The Sony Xperia 5 II sports a 4,000mAh battery. Both of those battery packs are more than enough for these smartphones.

Presuming you’re not pushing them extremely hard with games and other processor-intensive tasks, each of these smartphones should be able to cross that 6-hour screen-on-time market on a daily basis. Your mileage may vary, of course. Each of us uses our phones differently, and some of us may deplete these batteries much faster, while for some of us, they may last a long time.

Even if you deplete them ahead of time, both of these phones offer fast charging. The Galaxy S20 FE comes with 25W fast wired charging, 15W fast wireless charging, and even reverse wireless charging. The Sony Xperia 5 II, on the other hand, only offers 21W fast wired charging, though it comes with an 18W fast charger in the box. Based on this, the Galaxy S20 FE does have an edge when it comes to charging.

Samsung Galaxy S20 FE vs Sony Xperia 5 II: Cameras

Both of these phones have three cameras on the back. Main, telephoto, and ultra-wide cameras are included. Both setups are quite good, actually. Images taken with both phones end up looking really good, in all lighting conditions, pretty much. They tend to be sharp, well-balanced, and rich with detail in good lighting. The shots taken with the Galaxy S20 FE do end up looking a bit more saturated, though.

The dynamic range is quite impressive on the Galaxy S20 FE, while the Xperia 5 II also does a good job. Nighttime shots are a toss-up, it all depends on the scene, but both can do a really good job. Ultra-wide cameras are also quite capable, as long as you don’t use them during nighttime. Front-facing cameras are good on both phones, though we’d give a small advantage to the selfie shooter of the Galaxy S20 FE.

Audio

These two phones do not disappoint in the audio department either. They both pack in a really good pair of stereo speakers. Both can get pretty loud, and the sound is sharp. These speakers do pack a punch, as long as you remember these are smartphone speakers, of course. Not many people will have complaints about them, as the distortion is not noticeable until you really crank the volume all the way up.

Having said that, a 3.5mm headphone jack is only a part of the Xperia 5 II. Both phones offer solid sound through a pair of headphones, as long as those headphones are good enough. Highs and mids are especially good on both phones, while you will get some bass in the mix as well. For most people, these two phones will be more than enough in terms of audio, though they’re not the best out there.
