Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip: Design

First and foremost, it is worth noting that both the 4G and 5G variants of the Galaxy Z Flip look the same. They do offer slightly different internals, but they look exactly the same. With that out of the way, let’s just say that the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip are both made out of metal and glass. Both devices are quite slippery, so keep that in mind. Getting a case for each of them may be a good idea, these phones are not exactly cheap after all.

Galaxy Z Fold 2

The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is considerably larger than the Galaxy Z Flip. Granted, the Galaxy Z Flip is taller when unfolded, and it’s thicker when folded. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 is considerably wider, which is not surprising considering that its display is quite a bit larger than the one on the Galaxy Z Flip. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 folds horizontally, while the Galaxy Z Flip folds vertically. These are completely different foldable smartphone philosophies.

Bezels are really thin on both phones, while a display camera hole is included on both devices. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 actually has two of them, one for each display. Both phones have two displays, though the Galaxy Z Flip’s secondary display is extremely small. The Galaxy Z Fold 2’s rear camera setup sits in the top-left corner, while the Galaxy Z Flip’s is in the same spot, but that handset has one camera less than its sibling. The Galaxy Z Flip is almost 100 grams lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 2, which is also worth mentioning.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip: Display

Each of these devices has two displays. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 includes a 7.6-inch 2208 x 1768 AMOLED display. That is its main display, and a 120Hz panel. Its secondary display measures 6.23 inches, and it’s also an AMOLED display, but a 60Hz one. Both of these displays are flat, and the same goes for the ones on the Galaxy Z Flip.

That being said, the Galaxy Z Flip includes a 6.7-inch 2636 x 1080 main display, which is an AMOLED panel, but a 60Hz one. Its secondary display measures only 1.1 inches, and it’s an AMOLED unit as well. That display also runs at 60Hz, by the way, and it can’t show you much info due to its size.

The main display on both phones utilizes a UTG (Ultra Thin Glass) panel, with a plastic layer on top of it. Do note that both of those displays will be prone to scratching, so it’s a good thing both of these phones fold inwards. Those two main displays are quite vivid, they have good viewing angles, and are good panels overall. We cannot complain at all, they’re also quite sharp at the same time. The same goes for the Galaxy Z Fold 2’s secondary display.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip: Performance

Both of these phones are quite powerful, there’s no denying that. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip 5G both come with the Snapdragon 865 Plus, Qulacomm’s latest and greatest SoC (at the time of writing this comparison). The Galaxy Z Flip (4G), on the other hand, sports the Snapdragon 855 Plus processor. The difference in performance is basically not noticeable, though. Both of those chips are immensely powerful, and other than slightly slower booting when it comes to games and some apps on the Galaxy Z Flip, there’s really no notable performance difference.

Both devices pack in plenty of RAM and flash storage, along with Android 10 out of the box. Samsung’s One UI software has also been well optimized by the company here. We can’t say what will happen down the line, but the performance is great, no matter what you do. Both devices can run graphically-intensive games without a problem, and they also excel when it comes to multitasking, and so on.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip: Battery

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a 4,500mAh battery on the inside, while the Galaxy Z Flip has a 3,300mAh unit (both variants). The Galaxy Z Fold 2 does have larger displays to power, though, not to mention that its main panel offers a 120Hz refresh rate. Truth be told, neither of these two phones offers two-day battery life, or something like that. Battery life that they do offer, however, will be more than enough for most users.

Talking sheer numbers is not the best idea, as usage is vastly different from one person to the other, especially when it comes to foldables. Let’s just say this, the more you use that main display on the Galaxy Z Fold 2, the worse your battery life will be. You should be able to get over 5 hours of screen on time with relatively normal usage without a problem though. Gaming will further impact battery life, though.

Luckily, both of these handsets support fast charging. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 includes 25W wired charging, while the Galaxy Z Flip supports 15W wired charging. Wireless charging is also included on both phones, and so is Wireless PowerShare aka reverse wireless charging. Charging is not exactly as far as on some other phones, though, as you can see. Still, this should be more than enough for most people.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Z Flip: Cameras

The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip both include main (wide-angle) and ultra-wide cameras. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 also comes with a telephoto unit, which is something you won’t find on the Z Flip. That being said, these cameras setups are not the same. The Galaxy Z Fold 2 has a better camera setup, on paper. That is noticeable in some conditions when it comes to pictures themselves, but the Z Flip is not far behind.

The main camera on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 is a bit more capable in low light. It can preserve more detail, and sharpness is a bit better as well. In regular light, both cameras do an excellent job. Both are great when it comes to colors, and especially dynamic range. The white balance is also in check. The ultrawide cameras are good, but nothing to write home about. The telephoto unit on the Galaxy Z Fold 2 enables 2x optical zoom, and it can be quite useful in some situations. That camera is also good, but not great in low light.

Audio

The audio output is not vastly different between the two phones. Both feature stereo speakers tuned by AKG, and both support Dolby Atmos. A 3.5mm headphone jack is not included on either of the two devices. That being said, the sound from the speakers on these two phones is good. It’s not exactly the best around, or anything like that, but it’s more than good enough. The sound is loud, while the distortion is minimal. Sharpness is also present, these speakers do not sound tinny or anything like that.

Sound via a pair of headphones is also good. As is the case with other Samsung flagships, these two phones shine in mid and high ranges. The low range is a bit weaker, but not by much. The sound is well-balanced, and very few people will have something to complain about. Audiophiles are a different story, of course. In any case, the vast majority of you who purchase either of these two devices won’t be disappointed when it comes to audio, that’s for sure.
